October 9, 2024 - NEWSLETTER
Estimadas familias de Woodcrest,
It’s been great to see everyone back this week! We had professional learning last week around student engagement and literacy. Our teachers and educator apprentices were able to deepen their understanding of student engagement as well as their knowledge of how to teach reading. I’m excited for this learning to come to life in our classrooms!
We have conferences starting this Thursday evening, October 10. Next week, we will have conferences on Tuesday, October 15 in the evening and on Wednesday, October 16 during the day. We always look forward to these conversations with you about your child. It’s a great time to learn how your child is doing with our academic and our career and life competencies. If you still need to schedule a conference, please check in with your child’s teacher.
Due to conferences and the state teacher conference, we have a short week next week. We will have school as normal on Monday and Tuesday, October 14-15. There is no school for students Wednesday, October 16-Friday, October 18. Because of the short week, there will be no parent newsletter next Wednesday.
As a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we will close out the month with a special concert from a Mariachi band on Tuesday, October 15. We are able to host this assembly because our student winner of the Panther Foundation Sweepstakes chose this as a prize for our school. We are very excited to host the Mariachi band and grateful for this opportunity funded by the Panther Foundation.
In Partnership,
Jaime Nymann
Update immunizations by October 31, upcoming flu/COVID vaccine clinic
Students whose immunizations are not up to date by Thursday, October 31 will be excluded from school until their immunizations are current. Minnesota School Immunization Laws currently require all students enrolled in school to be immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTap/Td/Tdap), polio, measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), Hepatitis B, and varicella (chickenpox). One dose of the meningococcal (MCV) vaccine is due in 7th grade, and a booster dose at age 16.
The only exceptions are:
1. A student has had the chickenpox virus
2. Medical exemption with paperwork from your provider
3. Conscientious exemption with notarized exemption form
If you have a question about what is required for your child, please contact the school's health office at (763) 600-5804.

Last week, fourth grade students at Woodcrest went on a field trip to ”Big River Journey." Students were eager to be aboard a boat and were engaged in activities to learn more about the Mississippi River.
They learned:
- How the river has changed over time and shaped our Twin Cities area from National Park rangers
- How to clean water from the Science Museum of Minnesota
- The different birds that make their home on the mighty Mississippi from the Audubon Society
- The importance of mussels in the river and how otters thrive in the floodplain forest from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources
This field trip was such a wonderful opportunity for our students!
What does personalized learning really mean?
Designing the experience of school so kids care to learn is at the heart of Spring Lake Park Schools approach to personalized learning. But what does personalized learning really mean?
While a lot of schools talk about personalized learning more generally, we now have a resource that describes in more detail what the K-12 student journey should look and feel like when we are at our best at Spring Lake Park Schools. While no experience is ever perfect, the K-12 Student Journey provides examples of what we are aiming for in each of our Spring Lake Park schools as we work to create a sense of value and belonging, personalize learning and innovate at each grade level.
At the beginning of a new school year, this information provides the most current take on our approach and aspiration. Check out the full piece online.
SLPHS fall play: Puffs (for Young Wizards)
For seven years a certain boy wizard went to a certain Wizard School and conquered evil. This is not his story. This is the story of the Puffs... who just happened to be there too. A tale for anyone who has never been destined to save the world.
This production will be performed in "Theater in the Round" on the stage. A unique, up close experience you can only experience once every 3-4 years in Spring Lake Park Theater. Exciting for the cast, crew, and certainly the audience sitting just feet from the performers. Purchase your tickets today.
Performance dates:
- Friday, October 25, 7 p.m.
- Saturday, October 26, 7 p.m.
- Friday, November 1, 7 p.m.
- Saturday, November 2, 2 p.m.
