Welcome to the monthly Continuous Improvement and State & Federal Programs communication. The purpose is to contextualize Continuous Improvement into our daily work, to efficiently complete all State and Federal Program tasks, and to promote moving these tasks past simple compliance. Important Dates

MICIP Collaboration Series 2023

Mark your calendars for the 2023 MICIP Collaboration Series. Registration information will be coming soon via the MDE Continuous Communication, and I will also share it in my January Communication. The format will be similar to last year: 4-part, 1/2 day virtual series with processing and work time. Here are the dates and topics:
  • All sessions are virtual from 8:30 - 11:30
  • February 1 - Continuous Improvement 101
  • February 15 - Strategies & Activities, MICIP & the Consolidated Application
  • March 1 - Monitoring and Adjusting (2 tracks: beginner and experienced)
  • March 15 - Topical breakouts based on participant feedback


Attend the sessions that are the best fit for your experience and context. As in past years, all sessions will be recorded and shared. More info in the next MDE Continuous Communication.

Consolidated Application Amendments

  • Final allocations are posted to the MDE Program Allocations page. As of this writing, there has not yet been an official communication about the amendment window opening, or if there will be an extension to the January 15 due date.
  • As soon as the amendment window opens, I suggest logging into NexSys and Megs+ to check your final allocations and carryover amounts. If you notice any issues with carryover (especially in NexSys), contact your OES rep right away so there is time to work on a resolution.
  • Not seeing all of your Title I carryover? If you're carrying over more than 15% from last year, you'll need to follow the new 15% carryover process before it will show up in NexSys.
  • Since we have our final allocations and FERs have been submitted, there is nothing getting in the way of updating your budgets now so you're ready when the amendment window opens. Here is a very helpful presentation on the amendment process from OES.
  • If you work with private schools, be sure to connect with them to review updated budget amounts and document the consultation. Carryover can get tricky with private schools, so be sure to reach out to the OES rep if you have any questions.

School Index/Accountability

The 2021-2022 School Index is now publicly available on MISchoolData. The index system is complex but there are many helpful resources out there from MDE and other sources. Here are a couple good places to start, and a more complete list is below in the Resource Roundup:


A few numbers that were published this week in an MDE press release since the last time schools were identified:

  • Schools identified for CSI from 162 to 255
  • Schools identified for ATS from 60 to 68
  • Schools identified for TSI from 63 to 138


But something isn't right in my school's index!

I have had several questions about how to appeal the information in the Index, or how to get things updated. There is no way to do make any changes for the 21-22 index. Each component of the index is tied to processes that did have verification and appeals windows, such as tested roster, students not tested, REP, count days, etc. See page 3 - 4 of this document for specific details.

Make the most of these individual data quality opportunities now and in the future to ensure any data submitted to MDE is accurate. This will result in more accurate data in the next School Index. MDE created the Accountability Best Practices to provide guidance around all of these moving parts.
