This week at Compass, 9th-11th grade students will take one Horizon ACT section test per day during 6th period (flex/advisory), in order to track their progress on ACT-assessed skills, gain additional exposure to ACT-style testing, and help teachers plan for personalized instruction in various skill areas. Students who travel to another building during 6th period will have the option to take the tests at an alternate time. (This was originally scheduled for the week of 1/27, but due to technical issues with the testing platform and scheduling conflicts this week, we have shifted this to the week of 2/10.) Students have been emailed testing room information, and testing room assignments will also be posted at Compass.

An important aspect of the instructional model at Compass Academy is showing students the connections between what they are learning and potential careers, answering the perpetual student question: "How will I ever use this?" Teachers strive to build experiential learning opportunities and interactions with experts in related career fields into each seminar. Last week, representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) spoke to students in the Natural Disasters seminar, an interdisciplinary technology and earth science class, about their work with disaster planning. Students in the Creating Children's Literature seminar took part in a webinar with award-winning author, Jason Reynolds, who read from his book, There Was a Party for Langston, and answered questions from students all over the country.

In one example of a learning partnership we have developed this year with the Early Childhood Center, a number of Compass Academy students who play a musical instrument or participate in a vocal music group have volunteered to share their musical talents with EC students by giving a brief talk about their instrument and/or background in music, performing a song or two, and then leading a sing-along of popular children's songs, old and new, including "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and "Let It Go" from Frozen. Students who volunteered for this opportunity last week were Jordan G., Kiera M., Trevor S., and Gray S. The EC students loved learning from their "big kid friends."

Compass Academy students pre-order their lunch, so if your student plans to order lunch, please have them complete the form that is linked above. Students are always welcome to bring food from home, if they prefer. If your student may qualify for free or reduced lunch, please complete this form or have them get a paper copy of the form from the Compass office.
