MAY 8, 2024 - NEWSLETTER
SLPHS families,
May is a very busy and wonderful month at Spring Lake Park High School. There are a lot of student events, activities and celebrations that happen in the remaining four weeks of the school year.
Tonight, I look forward to attending the National Honor Society induction ceremony and celebrating the accomplishments of the 2024 inductees. This Saturday is Prom, and next week we have our senior award and scholarship night. In addition, there are many Spring athletic and arts performances still to take in for students and families.
We will host our rising 9th graders, currently in 8th grade, in this month for a spring welcome to the high school. We look forward to this Panther Mentor-led transition activity designed to welcome and prepare 8th graders for a successful transition to high school.
May is a time that also reminds me of “why” we do the work we do with students. There are so many things about our students that make me exceptionally proud. Thank you for partnering with us on your child’s developmental journey. Let’s work together to make sure all students end the year strong and prepared for their next steps.
One school, one community, SLPPantherProud!

Summer benefits to purchase food
Eligible families can receive additional funds this summer to help buy food through a new government program called Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (S-EBT). If your family qualifies, and your kids are eligible for free or reduced-price meals at school, you'll get $40 per child each month on a special card called an EBT card. Any family who has their application submitted and approved by May 31 will get all the money at the beginning of summer. Those who are approved after May 31 will get the money at the end of summer.
Please note, if you have already been approved for free or reduced-price meals for the 2023-2024 school year, you do not need to re-apply in order to receive the S-EBT benefits. Reach out to our Nutrition Services team if you are unsure of your status.
Here's who can qualify for Summer S-EBT:
- Kids who get SNAP, MFIP, FDPIR, Foster care, or Medicaid benefits
- Kids who are homeless, in foster care, migrant, or runaway
- Kids who got free or reduced-price meals for the school year 2023-2024
- Kids who become eligible for free or reduced-price meals during the summer until August 23, 2024
If you think you qualify, fill out an Educational Benefits application as soon as you can. For questions, call the Nutrition Services Department at 763-600-5041 or email foodservices@distirct16.org.
K-12: Minnesota Department of Education Redesigning Assessment Reports
The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) is looking for multiple perspectives as they redesign the statewide assessment reports and has launched the Statewide Testing Redesign Survey. The survey asks about how you receive, interpret and use statewide assessment results. Your feedback will help MDE ensure the results from the new assessments students take beginning in spring 2025 are as clear and useful as possible. This survey is optional. If you choose to participate, it will take about 20 minutes to complete, is anonymous, and is open for submissions until May 19.

Autism awareness month
Spring Lake Park High School students worked diligently in April to bring awareness to Autism by creating and designing signs, games, bagging treats with ASD tags, and offering a variety community opportunities.
Advisory Groups design the future
Let's hear it for student voice and collaboration! Student Advisory Groups from SLPHS and Two Rivers High School recently came together to collaborate and design their ideal school experience. They spent a half day getting to know each other as they worked through a human centered design process. So, what does the future look like?
- Increased counseling connections
- Relevant, engaging learning experiences
- Personalized schedules and learning time
- More career pathways
- Connections to community
Class of 2024 Senior Spotlight
We have asked our graduating seniors to share their plans for the future, favorite experiences and what makes them Panther Proud. Each week, we will continue to share student spotlights as we celebrate the Class of 2024. Read more about each spotlight's time at SLP.
Leena Darwish
"I'm SLP Panther Proud because of the experiences I was given while I was a student. I was given many opportunities to find who I was and find out what I wanted to do after high school. Faculty members were extremely supportive and made a great environment for me to grow."
Leena plans to attend the University of Minnesota this fall and double major in Finance and Economics.
Anas Sumrin
"Using the skills I learned from the Emergency Medical Responder and Emergency Medical Technician classes in a technical rescue environment was incredible. Never in a million years would I have imagined that something like that was possible as a high school class."
After graduation, Anas will attend Century College for their Paramedic Fire Sciences program.
Onyinyechukwu Udemezue
"Five out of seven days a week, I get to interact with some of the coolest, brightest, and compassionate learners I've ever met. The other two days of the week, I am learning from my SLP community to be the most genuine and curious person I can be. That is why I am #SLPPantherProud."
Onyinye received a full scholarship to Yale University this fall where she plans to go into medicine.
Driver's Education Classes
There is still space available for the upcoming driver's education classes starting May 13. See more information and register.
Don’t miss B2wins Duo on May 13
The Live on 65 performance series wraps up the year with an unforgettable show! We welcome B2wins to the Spring Lake Park High School Fine Arts Center stage Monday, May 13 at 7 p.m. These Brazilian twin brothers take the stage for a unique musical experience of the "Top 40 from the last 40" - four decades of the music you know and love. After growing up in the slums of Rio de Janeiro, Walter and Wagner learned to play the violin and became part of an orchestra that gained international attention. Learn more about B2wins and purchase tickets.
