WHAT'S UP AT WMS?
CHORUS CONCERT
In March, the WMS auditorium was filled with the wonderful harmonies and contagious energy of our 6th grade and 7/8th grade choruses! The repertoire was varied and artistic, and the full-capacity crowd was moved to tears with the unbelievable artistry of our students under the direction of Mr. Frontz. Bravo to all involved and a big "thank you" for bringing this joy to our community.
CIVICS WEEK
The 8th grade Civics team was excited to host 3 different civics events in the last week of March. On Monday, we welcomed a panel of local officials and community leaders to WMS, who talked to our 8th graders on their commitment to public service and how student voice is important to them in their roles. Thank you to all of our panel members: Assistant Superintendent of Schools: Emilys Peña, State Representative: Steve Owens, Watertown Police Captain: Dan Unsworth, City Courceys: John Airasian and Emily Izzo, and School Committee member: Lily Rayman-Read.
Later in the week, the high school and middle school held their inaugural Community Networking Fair, an event designed to connect local organizations with 8th and 9th graders to support their Civics Action Projects. The event helps our students to have a deeper understanding of Watertown’s needs and concrete ways in which they can contribute. This is a powerful way for organizations to connect with young leaders who are eager to make a difference and empowering students to become informed and active community members. In all, 18 local organizations and city departments shared their mission, educated students on community needs, and offered guidance to our next generation of civic leaders.
Finally, Cluster 5 went on a trip to the Kennedy Institute for the Senate where students acted as Senators for the day while debating a bill on voting rights! (Cluster 6 will be going on this trip in May).
Thank you to our panel members, local organizations, city departments, and all of our wonderful teachers and staff who helped make this week a great success.
LAURIE HALSE ANDERSON
Laurie Halse Anderson, award winning author of Speak, the Chains series, and several other books, came to visit us during WIN block last week! Our auditorium was packed with excited students as Laurie talked about her brand new middle grade book, Rebellion 1776, which is set in Boston during the American Revolution. Huge thank you to Ms. Cabral (school librarian) for setting this up for our students and to Laurie Halse Anderson for her fantastic presentation!
