Ohio State Testing Starts this Week
This week our 3rd-6th graders will begin taking their Ohio State Tests (OST's). Ohio law requires public school districts to administer state assessments assigned to each student’s enrolled grade level or course, regardless of the student’s time in Ohio public schools. There is no process allowing parents and/or students to indicate their choices to not participate in state testing. Schools must account for and report any student who did not participate in a required state test.
These state assessments tell us how well our students are growing in the knowledge and skills outlined in Ohio’s Learning Standards, as well as how our school is performing compared to others throughout Ohio.
Testing Schedule for OST's:
Reading
Grades 3-5: English Language Arts (ELA) Reading part 1 on Wednesday, April 10, 2024
Grades 3-5: English Language Arts (ELA) Reading part 2 on Thursday, April 11, 2024
Grade 6: English Language Arts (ELA) Reading part 1 on Thursday, April 11, 2024
Grade 6: English Language Arts (ELA) Reading part 2 on Tuesday, April 16, 2024
Science
Grade 5: Science part 1 on Tuesday, April 23, 2024
Grade 5: Science part 2 on Thursday April 25, 2024
Math
Grades 3-6: Mathematics part 1 on Tuesday, April 30, 2024
Grades 3-6: Mathematics part 2 on Thursday, May 2, 2024
Here are a few test prep tips:
📚 Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep the night before
📚 Make sure your child has a healthy breakfast the morning of testing
📚 Have your child dress comfortably
📚 Try to make the morning routine non-stressful
📚 Arrive to school on time
📚 Encourage them to try their best
For more information on state assessments and resources to help your student prepare, please visit https://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Testing/Testing-Forms-Rules-and-Committees/Parent-Resource-Toolkit to access the state’s Assessment Toolkit for Parents.
What about K-2nd Testing?
Our K-2 students don't yet have to worry about OST's. However, they will be testing in their part of the building as well. Our primary students will be working to show how much they've grown too. They will be testing in Acadience and i-Ready during the month of April and into May.
While they don't have the pressure of performing for the state... they still need your encouraging words, proper rest and meals to sustain them during their testing. Maybe even an extra snack or 2 in their lunch this month.
Planning to Chaperone an Upcoming Field Trip?
End of year field trips can't happen without our wonderful chaperones. Whether it's the 6th graders pulling an overnighter at Camp Campbell Guard or 2nd graders heading down to the Red's Hall of Fame Museum, we need chaperones.
Wondering what it takes to be a field trip chaperone? In addition to a little patience, you'll also need a purple volunteer badge. On most field trips students are split into groups and assigned to a chaperone. Whenever students are with non CPS employees they must be with a responsible adult who has had their background vetted and approved by CPS. CPS provides this approval in the form of a purple volunteer badge.
Interested but don't have a purple badge? Here's the process for obtaining a purple volunteer badge.
Process for Purple badge:
- BCII & FBI background checks can be done at the Ed. Center (2651 Burnet Ave 45219) No appointment is needed, walk in hours are M-Th 9:30a-12:30p and 1:30p-3p
- You'll need a completed Badge Authorization Form from the school. Our Resource Coordinator, Tywanna Watson (RC1) can fax this down for you. In order to do so she'll need your full name, email address and the type of badge you're getting (purple).
- Once BG is complete a badge appointment can be scheduled using the link below.

One More Week to Go... 2nd Grade Collecting Through 4/19
At Kilgour we pledge to take care of ourselves, and others! The 2nd graders have really invested in taking care of others this quarter. After watching some Steve Hartman Kindness 101 videos, they voted to help foster children in our tri-state area. Their willingness to lean into kindness gave way to their current fundraising campaign in partnership with Payton's Lemonade Stand.
They enlisted the help of Student Council to create posters and raise awareness for their fundraiser around the school. They have even done morning announcements to be sure their voices help amplify their campaign.
Will you follow their lead and fill the donation bins with cozy pajamas and gift cards for new gym shoes? See below for details on how to help them spread kindness to foster children in our area.
