This workshop provides educators and education leaders the skills and resources to connect their learning and take it from local to global. It provides hands-on collaborative learning using emerging technologies as well as concrete examples and stories of those who are already doing this to help inform your approach as a global educator.

It is imperative students receive a global education and have the opportunity to connect and work with others in the world. Embedding global learning and competency is not a plane ticket but a mindset, a toolkit and a curriculum imperative. Where do you start? This workshop will show you how.

Workshop Leader: Julie Lindsay

Julie Lindsay is a global educator, innovator, leader and author. Based now in Australia, she has led the way in technology-infused connections and collaborations across six countries including Africa, Asia and the Middle East. As an IT Director in international schools she implemented 1:1 learning and worked with teachers from K-12 on pedagogical applications for mobile and ubiquitous computing. She also developed a unique approach to online learning and global collaboration using Web 2.0 tools and connected learning approaches. Her book, ‘Flattening Classrooms, Engaging Minds’ is acclaimed as the definitive text on how to embed global connections and collaborations for meaningful learning.

As a consultant, presenter, workshop leader and conference designer Julie is kept busy as Director of Learning Confluence, founder of Flat Connections, and Adjunct Lecturer at Charles Sturt University, Faculty of Education.

Julie is an Apple Distinguished Educator, a Google Certified Teacher and recipient of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) ‘Making IT Happen’ Award in 2013, and of the ISTE Online Learning Award in 2007. She is an ISTE Ambassador and former ISTE Board member, and member of the Horizon Report Board of Advisers 2008-2015 and a member of the Leadership team for the Global Education Conference 2010-14.

She is completing her Education Doctorate (EdD) with the University of Southern Queensland with a focus on facilitating positive social change through innovative pedagogy for technology-infused global collaboration.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is for K-12 educators as well as leaders in schools and government who make pertinent decisions about how teachers and students learn and do.

With a focus on the use of technology (mobile devices, cloud computing, Web 2.0, and more) it is ideal for schools implementing BYOD and moving into cloud-based apps. It is also perfect for schools talking about how to implement global awareness and competency as well as global digital citizenship and collaboration across the curriculum and between schools.

Purpose and Objectives

Participants will be immersed in 'flat' or connected learning modes and explore global collaboration as a pedagogy. A hands-on approach will allow participants to explore, discuss and model collaborative use of emerging technologies scaffolded by the steps and actions to flatten the classroom.

Focus will also be on how to participate in a global project, how to engage learners and your extended network in global interactions, as well as how to support global education and global competency within your school or learning environment.

What will you do?

Participants will collaborate in teams and build a resource together that can start the global learning journey.
They will develop an enhanced understanding, through direct experience, of the role emerging technologies and innovative pedagogies play in supporting globally competent learners. They will also have the tools and strategies to become leaders in global connected learning within their schools and internationally and will be sought as partners by those planning global collaborations.

Tools for collaboration will include Google apps, Web 2.0 applications such as wikis and Ning, social bookmarking and other online tools for creating and sharing multimedia for differentiated outcomes.

Workshop Influences

Content for the workshop comes from the book 'Flattening Classrooms, Engaging Minds: Move to Global Collaboration One Step at a Time', Published by Pearson 2012, and from the practical experience and myriad of examples Julie has from 20+ years of global collaboration in the classroom and in teacher development.
Flat Connections global projects will be featured, amongst other examples, as best-practice innovative pedagogy for online global collaboration.

Learning Outcomes

Define global learning, the impact of emerging technologies and explore enablers and barriers
Explore what it means to be a connected (flat) learner, how to connect, tools for connection
Understand how to build a PLN, use social media, build a connected community and sustain authentic global connections for learning
Understand how the sociability of an online community and connected learning can support collaborative pedagogy
Discover a global digital citizenship model that raises the bar for everyone in a mobile and ubiquitous digital learning environment
Identify better collaboration for learning through understanding of techniques and digital tools supported by hands-on activities
Understand higher order thinking through cross-cultural and global co-creation of learning artifacts that make a difference
Know where to find global collaborative partners and how to build sustained relationships for curriculum development
Explore global project design and management and learn how to support this in the learning context
Consider how to move from ‘facilitator’ to ‘activator’ in the design and implementation of global learning and curriculum

Recognition for PD and Graduate Credit available

This workshop is designed as a 10-hour professional development course with time also allocated for 'lab' sessions to develop skills with Web 2.0 tools. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance as evidence for completion of the 10 hours.

This workshop is modeled on the very successful Flat Connections Conference Leadership Workshop implemented at live events around the world and the Flat Connections Global Educator online professional development. Participants will be given the option to continue working with the Global Educator cohort that commences in June or September 2015 to complete the course online. Two graduate credits are available from the University of Northern Iowa for completion of the full certificate. There is additional cost for these graduate credits of $150.
