Mar Vista Parent Newsletter
Week of October 5, 2020
Dear Families,
Happy October! It doesn't quite feel like fall yet with the hot weather, but we are certainly entering the season that many children find so fun and memorable! Please encourage your child to participate in class discussions, the spirit week theme activities, virtual recesses, librarian read-alouds and library book check distribution as well as the upcoming book fair! There are lots of ways to stay engaged with the Mar Vista community and we are looking forward to planning many more events soon!
Just a reminder to please make sure to visit the distribution times to pick up materials. If you have any challenges making those times, please call our office to schedule a different pick up time. Our office can be reached at (831)761-6177 on Monday through Friday between 7am and 4pm. Please call first and we can have your materials ready for you when you arrive!
Did you know Grades 3-6 use MAP Accelerator? This is an effective online Math Program that responds dynamically to students' math levels as identified by the MAP assessments that occurred over the past two weeks. I encourage families to attend the MAP Accelerator Math Night on Thursday 10/8 from 6:30-8:00 to learn how this program helps your child make increased gains in math! For more information, click here.
All grade levels are forging ahead with high quality instruction in English Language Arts, Math, Art, PE and other subjects. Want to know what the focus is for the week? Please check out your child's classroom weekly planner located in the Google Classroom. This is where to find the weekly schedule, learning objectives, resources and small group meeting links. I've been so impressed with student engagement and responsiveness while I visit classrooms to see the progress with distance learning. I hope you've been able to hear some of this for yourself, as well. As always, if your child is experiencing any trouble with access or engagement, please contact their teacher directly. Mr. J and I will continue to work with teachers, students and families to support individual needs during distance learning. We appreciate your partnership!
Warm regards,
Stephanie Monroe
Mr. J's Academic Coordinator Update
Hello, Families!
I have to say how impressed I am with the way students handled the MAP assessment across the board. They truly showed resilience and patience throughout the process. I will be conducting make-ups for any student that did not finish the assessment over this coming week.
Be on the lookout for a parent informational needs survey that I will be sending out this week. This survey is designed to give us information about how we can best support your family by providing information on various aspects of distance learning.
Best wishes to all of you!

Click on the “Hamburger”/ 3 white lines in the upper right corner
Click on “Library”
Click on “Mar Vista Library”
Scroll down to “Search for a book or place a hold on a book from the Mar Vista School Library” Click on this option. This takes you to the MV library catalog.
Click on “Log in” in the upper right corner
For username, enter your student’s 7 digit student ID Number. This usually starts with 400****.
For Password, enter your student’s password, which is the first 2 letters of their birth month (first letter capitalized), the birth day, and year. For example, if your student’s birthday is October 5, 2013 the password would be Oc052013.
Click “Catalog”. Search for a title, author, or subject. Browse your book options until you find one you want to place a hold on.
Click on the title, on the right hand side you will see a button that says, “hold it”. Like this: Click this to place your hold or click on search results to go back to your search results until you find a book you desire. Repeat for up to 10 books.
Pick up your available holds on Mondays at Mar Vista, 3-5 PM. Please wear a mask, please stay in your car if possible.
Return books to Mrs. J at curbside Mondays, 3-5 or to the office.
Students now have a 3 week loan period and renewals are almost always an option! If I have a pressing need to have the book returned to fulfill another student's hold, I will give them a head's up for a week.
