5th Grade End of Year Updates
Please save the date of Monday June 10th for our 5th grade promotion ceremony. The promotion will be held at Sherwood Elementary School in the morning. The tentative time of the promotion ceremony is 9:40am-11:00am.
Please review the messages below from 5th grade parent group planning end of year events:
End of Year Party
The time is fast approaching for our kids to share their final days at Sherwood. The teachers have planned a lovely promotion ceremony the morning of Monday, June 10th and our Planning Committee has planned a festive family potluck party that same evening from 6-8pm at the backyard pavilion at SES. This event is coordinated and hosted by all of the 5th grade families (that's YOU!). All of the details on how to donate, what to bring and your RSVP are in the SignUpGenius at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0848A8AC2FAAF58-49466285-promotion so please fill that out as soon as possible.
Optional Teacher Appreciation
Dear Parents,
Let’s show the 5th grade team of teachers our appreciation for their hard work and dedication to our children!
Since our children bounce between classrooms, we are collecting through GiftCrowd a collective gift that will be split equally between the four 5th grade teachers.
To contribute, enter your name (or your child's name) as you'd like it to be displayed to the teachers and your email address. You are welcome to include a personal greeting that will be sent to each of the teachers as well as upload a photo and/or format your greeting as you wish! I usually have Sofia draw a picture and/or write a thank you note that I upload with our contribution.
On 06/12/2024 12:00 PM ET, every gift recipient will receive an email with personal greetings from all the contributors. Each teacher will then be able to redeem their gift by selecting gift cards from hundreds of leading brands, including Amazon, Target, Walmart, Sephora, Nike, Visa and many other fashion, travel, electronics, furniture, DIY stores as well as restaurants and entertainment chains.
The deadline for joining gifts is 06/12/2024 12:00 PM ET.
Some things to keep in mind:
1. Do not feel obligated to contribute!
2. It is COMPLETELY anonymous. I/the creator, cannot see who contributes, much less, how much. The recipients cannot see the individual contributions, only your personal messages.
3. Piggybacking on point #2, because we cannot see who has contributed and some parents, like myself, appreciate reminders...you may receive multiple reminders. If it's annoying and bothersome, delete it and move on (until the next reminder). I can attest that after each reminder, there is a flux of 'oh yeah, I forgot' emails followed by a contribution.
4. No amount is too small! It all adds up.

Summer School Enrollment
This year, MCPS is offering an invitation-only, in-person summer school for students who would benefit from the experience of additional time with the core learning from the current grade level.
The Extended Learning Opportunities Additional Targeted Support Improvement Elementary Summer Program can give students an academic boost!
Summer school will be held at Olney Elementary School for students from Sherwood Elementary School. Bus transportation will be provided at centralized locations. This means the number of bus stops is reduced from normal school year routes.
The program runs from Monday, July 8- Friday, August 2. Daily hours for our program are tentatively 9:30 am-2:00 pm. The learning day will include lessons supporting the key concepts of the grade level just completed in English Language Arts, Mathematics, STEM, Social Studies, and hands-on exploration. The schedule will also include breaks.
There will be time for lunch. Currently, at our school location, lunch will not be provided. Students are encouraged to pack a bagged lunch each day.
Families of invited students should have received an email with the enrollment form this week. Please reach out to Mr. Vaughn-Smith, Assistant Principal with any questions.
