Dear Justiss Families,
Justiss Friends & Families,
This week we have had the Book Fair at Justiss and it made me think about how much the kids at Justiss love to be read to. I thought I would help with a few tips on helping your students at home with reading and building more interest in reading while at home to help ignite that passion even more!
Reading often at home builds those skills and background knowledge that help your child get more out of reading for school. At home making reading daily a priority builds their reading enthusiasm. Try these few things if you can and see if it helps your students:
Take turns reading aloud. You can alternate sentences or chapters.
Choose a book or article you’ll both read. Set aside time to talk about it.
Create a cozy reading spot! This makes reading more appealing.
Let your child see you reading. Share interesting tidbits: “I just read the strangest story in the news.”
Enjoy reading with your child(ren) and ignite the love for reading together!
Thank you, Mr. Smyers

During the month of November, there are so many reasons and people to be thankful for! One very special group of individuals are our Veterans! That is why we want to celebrate them on Thursday, Nov. 7th at 9:00 with our annual Veterans Day Program! We want to thank them and let them know we appreciate them and are so grateful for their sacrifice and service to our country! Notes were sent home last week, asking for information about Veterans in your family, both living and deceased. We will create a “Wall of Honor, along with recognizing each guest at our Program .
PLEASE RETURN ALL VETERAN FORMS BY TUESDAY, NOV. 4TH!
(EXTRA FORMS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST)
THANK YOU TO ALL OUR VETERANS!
During the month of November students will be learning about the Big Idea, “Generosity”. Which is perfect for acknowledging the generous and courageous sacrifice our Veterans gave and continue to give to this country! We are the “Land of the Free” because of “The Brave”!
In helping your child understand the value of Generosity, here are a few things to consider:
First, we must see the need…Routines and daily activities keep us so busy that sometimes it is difficult to see what is right in front of us. People who are hurting or in need don’t ask for help often. Look at people and think, “What can I do to help? Opportunities to be generous surround us at home, school and on the job!
Recognizing a need leads to action…Generosity begins with a genuine caring attitude but then takes the next step. For example, when you hear that a family has lost their home to a fire during the holiday season, it’s no mystery that they need clothes, food, money, etc. How to help comes naturally after making the decision to help!
Two needs are met…The recipient is usually appreciative but we also benefit drastically through our act of generosity. Our basic inner need to “be needed” is fulfilled. We can identify with the needs of others because at some time, all of us have needed someone’s help. Our world is enriched by the connection with the person we helped.
Overcoming selfishness with generosity takes effort. Being generous requires that we see the value of those around us. Where do we start? By realizing how dependent we are on those we live with and come in contact with each day. Make a decision this month to set the example of generosity by looking at others and saying, “How may I help you?”
Wishing you and your family a very Happy “Thanks”…”giving” and may you be reminded of all those who have been generous to you and in turn, look for opportunities to be generous to others!
Kindest Regards,
Andrea Irwin andKaren Raney
