St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon, Priest, and Paul Chong Ha-Sang, and Companions, Martyrs
In the late 1700s, a group of Korean scholars, led by Yi Byeok, learned about Catholicism. One of them, Yi Seung-hun, was baptized in Beijing in 1784 and started a faith community in Korea, marking the beginning of the Korean Catholic Church. This is special because the Korean Church wasn’t started by missionaries but by regular people.
At that time, Korea followed Confucian beliefs, which clashed with Christianity. This led to persecution, especially because the Church opposed certain rituals. From 1791 to 1866, over 10,000 Christians were martyred for their faith.
In 1984, Pope John Paul II visited Korea and canonized 103 martyrs, including Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon and Saint Paul Chong Ha-sang. Their feast day is now celebrated on September 20.
On this special day, the Feast of Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon, Saint Paul Chong Ha-sang, and their Companions, let’s remember and honor our ancestors in faith. We thank God for bringing us the light of the Gospel through their sacrifice. Let’s follow their example by carrying our own crosses and following Jesus.
Joint English/Korean Mass and Chuseok Festivities
Thank you to everyone who attended the Chuseok Mass and picnic! It was truly special to celebrate together in both English and Korean with around 650 members of St. Paul Chong Ha Sang. Having Bishop Grob join us made the occasion even more meaningful. We are so grateful for the opportunity to honor our Hangawi(Chuseok) traditions and culture through this Mass.
Despite the hot weather, many dedicated volunteers came out as early as Saturday to set up tents, decorate the stage, prepare food, and clean up after the event. The lunch they prepared was absolutely delicious, and the fun games and prizes added even more excitement to the day. The game helpers did an amazing job leading the activities, and we hope everyone enjoyed participating and managed to take home at least one prize.
Thanks to the hard work of all our volunteers, including the Youth Group, this event was a great success. We sincerely appreciate all your help and support!

Seminarian Education Fund Collection - September 21-22
The Annual Seminarian Appeal collection will take place the weekend of September 21-22, 2024. This is an important source of funding for our ministry of priestly formation in the Archdiocese of Chicago. This appeal supports not only Mundelein Seminary, but also our college seminarians who now study at St. John Vianney College Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Your financial support helps cover the cost of their preparation, which includes tuition and fees, room and board and health insurance. Please know, too, that promoting priestly vocations is the work of the entire Church. You can help support vocations by praying for an increase in vocations, encouraging young men to consider the priesthood, praying for our seminarians, and supporting Mundelein Seminary. Please keep our seminarians in your prayers as they continue their journey toward the priesthood. On behalf of all seminarians, thank you for your generosity.
