Message from the Principal
Dear Sagebrush Families,
As the winter break approaches, we are excited to share a special event that promises to bring warmth, joy, and togetherness to our school community. Instead of traditional classroom winter parties, we will be hosting a Pajama Day and School-Wide Read-In on Friday, December 20th.
On this day, students are invited to come to school dressed in their coziest pajamas and bring along their favorite book to share or enjoy. Throughout the day, classrooms will participate in engaging read-aloud sessions, independent reading time, and other literacy-focused activities that celebrate the joy of stories and the magic of books.
You and other important family members are invited and welcome to take part in this exciting event from 8:00 am - 9:00 am that morning. You may even wear your school appropriate pajamas as well.
Our Pajama Day and Read-In is a wonderful way to come together as a school community and celebrate the spirit of the season in a meaningful way. We encourage families to talk with their children about the books they’re bringing and share their own favorite childhood stories at home.

Congratulations to our Spelling Bee Winners!
We had a fascinating spelling bee this year with wonderful spellers. The spellers were so great that we had to finish the spelling bee the next morning. Our spellers worked very hard and had to perform in front of a large crowd and overcome nerves. They did great!

Cherry Creek District Chess Tournament
Saturday, February 22, 2025
Enroll early...tournament will be limited to the first 200 students who sign up
DIVISIONS: Grades K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Middle School (6-8), and High School (9-12). Similar age groups may be combined. Students must attend a school in the Cherry Creek School District to play. This is a non-rated tournament. USCF rules will apply.
ENTRY FEE: $30.00 per child*. Money and registration MUST be received by Saturday, February 15, 2025. There will be no on-site registration. No confirmation letters will be sent.
TIMES: Check in is 8:00 to 8:30 a.m. The Players Meeting is at 8:30 a.m. (All competitors must attend). Round 1 begins at 9:00 am. Each round will take approximately one hour. There will be no scheduled lunch break and no food will be provided. Players should bring their own sack lunch and snacks to eat in between rounds. This is a 5-round, non-elimination tournament - players should plan to participate in all five rounds. The tournament should end around 3:00-3:30.
TIME CONTROL: Time control is G/30 (30 minutes, per player, per game). A clock may be placed on games still in progress 40 minutes after the round start time, with each player getting 10 minutes. Most of the children are not experienced with chess clocks. We will explain how to use the clock to the children, as needed.
PRIZES: In each division, the top finishers will be awarded trophies. Participation awards will be given to non-trophy winners. Awards ceremony will follow the final round and will occur mid-late afternoon, after Round 5 is completed. Ties for trophies will be broken with the following tie-break systems: 1. Modified Median 2.Solkoff 3.Cumulative.
LOCATION: Overland High School, 12400 E. Jewel Ave; Aurora (Enter west side of Overland High School off Jewel Ave. (just east of Peoria St.), go south to the rear of Overland HS and park. Enter Overland HS from the south entrance.
SUPERVISION: Good behavior of all participants is expected. All players 12 years old and younger must have a parent/guardian present for the entire tournament. While parents are not allowed in the competition area once a round begins, parents are required to supervise their children between each round. If it becomes clear a child does not have supervision between rounds, he/she will forfeit the opportunity to compete further and will be asked to leave.

Lunch will not be provided. Bring snacks, beverages, and lunch for your child. Every child needs adult supervision for the entire tournament. Parents are not to drop off their children for the day and leave them unattended.
No confirmation letters will be sent. If your registration arrives after 200 players are registered, you will be notified at the phone number listed on your entry form. Checks will be deposited after the tournament.

If the district cancels activities/events on February 22 due to inclement weather, the Tournament will take place on Sunday, February 23rd (same times).

Holiday Season & School Attendance: A Reminder
As the holidays approach, we know many families have exciting plans, but we want to remind you of the importance of maintaining regular school attendance during this time. The weeks before the break are often filled with critical lessons, assessments, and preparations for the new term. Missing school can create gaps in learning that are difficult to catch up on. Make-up work does not fully help students recover missed instruction, and one student’s absence impacts classmates’ progress due to the collaborative nature of learning.
Every school day counts in helping your child grow academically, socially, and emotionally. We encourage you to plan travel and events around the school calendar whenever possible. If you know your child will be absent, please let us know in advance so we can support their continued learning.

Even though all students in Colorado receive free lunch, we are asking families to fill out the free and reduced lunch application because it helps us maintain our Title I status. Title I is a Federal program that provides funding based on the number of students eligible for free and reduced-price lunch, and these funds support additional educational resources, programs, and services for students who need them most. By completing the form, even if you don't think you qualify, you ensure that our school continues to receive critical funding to support all students. Your participation makes a big difference in maintaining these important resources!
