Highlights from Another Amazing Week in SSD!
Raising the Bar: 7th Graders Bring the Courtroom to Life in Epic Mock Trial!
After two weeks of intense preparation, Ms. Schrunk’s 7th grade Honors Language Arts class brought the courtroom to life with their Mock Trial performance, and it was nothing short of spectacular!
Using official materials from the Civics Learning Project in partnership with Lewis & Clark Law School, students dove deep into a realistic mock legal case, complete with charges, stipulations, witness statements, and admissible exhibits. Once they understood the ins and outs of the case, the class split into two powerhouse teams, prosecution and defense, and got to work crafting compelling opening and closing statements, as well as a full slate of examination and cross-examination questions.
Each student stepped into character, fully embodying their assigned witness or attorney role. They didn’t just memorize lines, they became their characters, responding authentically and thoughtfully. The real test came during the trial, when students had to think on their feet, asking sharp re-direct and re-cross questions in real time.
And the verdict? A total success!
In front of not just their peers (an 8th grade jury) but also a 12-person panel of parents and community members, the students absolutely nailed it. Their delivery was poised and professional, their arguments were layered and persuasive, and they masterfully highlighted the finer details of the case.
It was a courtroom showdown to remember, and these future legal minds crushed it!
SHS April Rotary Student of the Month
The Scappoose High School Rotary Student of the Month for April is Natalie Egan. Natalie is a lifelong Scappoose student, and she exemplifies dedication, leadership, and a strong commitment to serving others.
Natalie maintains an impressive 4.25 GPA, balancing a rigorous academic schedule filled with advanced, honors, and dual credit courses. Her leadership skills are evident in her role as the current ASB Vice President and former Junior Class President. In 2023, she demonstrated her academic excellence by qualifying for nationals with FBLA in Computer Applications and Business Concepts.
Beyond the classroom, Natalie is deeply involved in school and community service. She has played a key role in Doernbecher Week, helping raise over $15,000 annually for children's healthcare. As a Link Leader, she supports incoming freshmen in their transition to high school, and as a GW Elementary recess monitor, she has mentored younger students. Additionally, she was instrumental in launching the "We See You Club," which promotes inclusivity and school morale.
Natalie's leadership extends to her service as the student representative to the School Board for the 2024-2025 school year. Outside of school, she has managed the Little League Snack Shack since 2021 and works at Dutch Bros, where she greets our community with enthusiasm and positivity.
Described by her teachers as empathetic, dependable, and an inspiring student leader, Natalie is well-prepared for the next step in her journey. She will be attending Boise State University, where she plans to pursue a degree in nursing.
Congratulations, Natalie! We commend your achievements and look forward to seeing all that you accomplish in the future.
Scappoose FBLA Shines at State Conference: 32 Top-10 Finishes, 22 Headed to Nationals, and 2nd Place Chapter Award!
The Oregon Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) State Conference unfolded this past Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Portland, OR, drawing over 1,500 students from across the state to compete in more than 75 different event categories.
Of the 37 Scappoose FBLA students who competed, 32 of them placed in the Top 10 of their respective events and 22 of those students qualified for Nationals in Anaheim this summer by placing in the Top 4 of their event!
In addition to all of the individual awards Scappoose FBLA took home, they also took 2nd place as a chapter in the second annual "Sweepstakes" award. This is a point system where programs earn points based on earned top 10 finishes. This result was out of 50 high schools and was the second consecutive year for Scappoose FBLA earning a 2nd place finish in the Sweepstakes.
Congrats FBLA on all of the successes!
5th Graders Take Over JA BizTown: A Hands-On Adventure in Economics, Civics, and Real-World Fun!
After eight weeks of diving into civic responsibilities, financial literacy, and the inner workings of an economy, our 5th graders put their knowledge to the test with an unforgettable trip to JA BizTown in Hillsboro!
From applying for jobs and electing a mayor to earning paychecks and shopping at local "businesses," students fully immersed themselves in their own mini city! They worked together at their job sites, applied for business loans, balanced budgets, paid bills, and even voted in real elections. All in one action-packed day.
Huge thanks to JA BizTown, Northwest Regional ESD, and SEPO for making this hands-on learning experience possible. Our 5th graders walked away inspired, empowered, and with big smiles on their faces. What a way to bring real-world learning to life!

3rd Graders Explore Salmon, Wildfires, and History at Tillamook Forest Center!
This week, 3rd grade students had an awesome adventure at the Tillamook Forest Center! They hiked through the forest, learning about the salmon life cycle and played a fun game to see what challenges salmon face, like predators and pollution.
At the museum, they discovered the history of the Tillamook forest, wildfire prevention, and even watched an exciting documentary about Oregon firefighters. The highlight of the day? Climbing the old fire lookout tower and stepping into history, just like the original fire watchers!
It was a day full of fun, learning, and hands-on experiences in the heart of the forest!

For the next two weeks at Grant Watts we have Buddy-Up check out due to no school for grading days and conferences, so we are having a lot of fun checking out books and hanging out with our Buddy classes.
Superkid Sandwiches for the win!! We have had a lot of fun immersing ourselves in Kindness through The March Madness bracket at OPE and we have decided the world needs a lot more kindness! "Don't forget to show love!" ~ Superkid
We are excited to announce that we funded our 3rd DonorsChoose project this week, this time for the middle school. New graphic novels are on their way to our library shelves as we speak! Thank you for your support!

SSD Inclement Weather and Snow Routes
The winter months bring with them the possibility of busses being on snow routes, school closures, or delayed openings due to severe weather conditions, power outages, or other unexpected events.
With student safety leading these decisions and an understanding of the disruption these closures and delays cause our families and staff, SSD is committed to announcing changes to the school schedule as early as possible. If conditions are severe enough to threaten the safety of students traveling to and from school, a decision will be made the night before. Otherwise, decisions will be made by 6 a.m.
How we will notify you:
- FlashAlert.net
- Phone call
- District email
- SSD App notification
2024-2025 SSD Snow Routes can be found on our website HERE. Additionally, snow routes are listed on the District and individual school websites at the top of each page. If you have questions about bus pick-up or drop-off locations, please contact First Student at 971-290-4020.
We hope that providing this information will make inclement weather days easier to navigate.
Prevent the Spread: Guidelines for Keeping Sick Students Home
Keeping our students healthy is a top priority, and we need your help! Please keep your student home if they are experiencing a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or any symptoms of contagious illness. Staying home when sick helps prevent the spread of illness.
Click the links below for some important guidelines about recommendations on when to keep students with symptoms out of school.
Important Driver/Walker/Biker Safety Reminder
As the school year begins, we must prioritize safety around our school grounds.
Drivers: Please exercise caution and be aware of the increased pedestrian and cyclist traffic during drop-off and pick-up times. Adhere to posted speed limits and remain vigilant for crossing guards and children crossing the streets. Your attentiveness can prevent accidents and ensure the safety of our students.
Walkers and Bike Riders: Please remain alert and follow all safety guidelines while traveling to and from school. Use crosswalks and obey traffic signals. If biking, wear a helmet and ensure your bike is equipped with lights for visibility.
Together, we can make sure that our children have a safe and positive experience as they travel to and from school. Thank you for your attention to this important matter and for your continued support in keeping our school community safe.

To streamline our social media communication and ensure that accurate information reaches our community, we are transitioning to an information only/no commenting approach for our social media posts. This change is designed to minimize negative or irrelevant comments and to encourage direct communication with our District Office or individual schools. By doing so, we aim to prevent the spread of misinformation and ensure that the community receives official responses through the appropriate channels. We believe this approach will enhance the clarity, positivity, and effectiveness of our communications. If you have any questions regarding information in our posts, please connect the relevant school or District office directly. You can still look forward to all of our usual content and information throughout the year.
Thank you for being a vital part of our SSD family! We wish you the very best start to the school year!
