May It Be of Benefit
Hello Tiger Families,:
As we head into October, I have a couple of things I'd like to focus on. We are off and really in the thick of learning this month. Routines have been established and review has happened and new learning happening every day. Your support as families makes a very big difference for your children. The most important thing you can do to enhance your child's learning is to support their reading. Be flexible and find what works best for your household. Children can read to you aloud while you cook dinner. You can read together before turning out the light at bedtime. They can read to a family pet. Even if your child isn't a reader (yet), you can read books aloud to them- yes, that counts as reading and is shown through studies to be very beneficial! The next most helpful thing that families can do is help their child learn/memorize their math facts. The focus before 3rd grade is on addition facts (to10 and then 20), and for grades 3 to 5, the focus should be on multiplication facts. I always tell students that they do not need to worry about learning subtraction or division if they remember 'Fact Families' (if 3+5=8 then 8-3 has to be 5 and 8-5 has to be 3...those are the only members of that family). Reading and math fact fluency are foundational skills that make room in our brains for higher level thinking and problem solving.
I also want to mention that October is Digital Citizenship month and the week of October 14-18 our students in 2nd - 5th grades will be exploring lessons that address how to stay safe and be responsible while using the Internet.
Finally, the last week of October is Just Say No Week and our campus will be exploring ways to celebrate being good to our bodies and minds by staying drug-free. Our students chose 4 of their favorite dress-up days and each has a themed connection to staying healthy and living a drug-free life. On October 17th, all families are invited to an EESD Family Education Event with guest speaker, Rocky Herron, a former DEA agent. This event is free and dinner and childcare are provided. It will be held at the Mistletoe gymnasium. Please see the flyer below for a QR Code to register if you would like dinner and/or childcare. I hope to see you there!
With gratitude,
Mrs. Gold
PS- Please remember that the Friday following Halloween Day (November 1st) is a Staff Development Day- no school for students.

Habit #2 Begin with the End in Mind
Understanding the Habit "Begin With the End in Mind" means to think about how you would like something to turn out before getting it started. “I plan ahead and set goals. I do things that have meaning and make a difference. I am an important part of my classroom. I can make a difference and contribute to the vision and goals of my school and in my classroom. I look for ways to be a good citizen.”
Skills learned by Beginning With the End in Mind: 1. Use critical thinking to organize information. 2. Develop intrapersonal skills of self-confidence and self-management. 3. Use creative thinking to solve problems. 4. Develop the ability to set goals and follow through. 5. Develop strong oral and written communication skills.
“We may be young and we may not know everything, but we are our own person and we have our own mind and our own thoughts. We know what is most important to us” –Jorge
