This course provides core critical thinking, reading, research, and writing skills transferable to all academic disciplines. Students will practice various forms of academic writing, including summary, critical analysis, and written methods of inquiry, critique, and reflection. Students will be assessed based on assignments, a mid-term exam, and an in-class final exam.
Students completing this course will receive credit in both English 151 at Camosun College (transferable to various post-secondary institutions) as well as 8 credits towards graduation. Check the BC Transfer Guide website for specific information regarding post-secondary course transferability.

Submit your original production for a chance to win cash!
The theme for the 2025 Student Safety Video Contest is Show Up, Speak Up for Safety.
When you’re new to work, some things may feel beyond your control. But you have the power to make your workplace safer and healthier. Show up and speak up when something feels unsafe. Take part in health and safety activities in the workplace.
Tell us how young workers can do more than just show up at work. What can you and other young workers do to improve safety at work for everyone by showing up and speaking up?

Spaces are still available in both the Teens and Youth Winter Session of the Y Mind group. Information sessions are on Tuesday, January 21 for youth and Wednesday, January 22 for teens, with groups beginning February 4 for youth and January 29 for teens, respectively.
Online registration for information/intake sessions is available here: YMCA-YWCA of Vancouver Island Online Services (activecommunities.com).
For more information, check out our website here or see below.
As a reminder, the Y Mind group is a free, weekly psychoeducational support group for teens (13-18) and young adults (18-30) experiencing mild to moderate stress, worries, and anxiety. Participants learn healthy coping skills through mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Self-Compassion to navigate their stress, connect with other young people, and receive support—all in a safe and supportive community environment.
This group can be particularly beneficial for athletes, performers, as well as those experiencing life changes, transitioning to higher education or work, or dealing with challenging family/social dynamics. These valuable life skills can be used for the rest of their lives.
There is NO COST. Participants receive a Y gym membership during the program and a cool workbook. We have in-person groups downtown, in Westshore, and through other community and school partnerships on the island.
