Dragon Community Newsletter #20
Denn John Middle School 24-25: January 13, 2025
Together! Always!
Dragon Community,
I hope this message finds you well. As we continue to foster a positive and successful learning environment for our students, I’d like to address several important areas that can significantly impact your child’s academic success and overall well-being. First, it is essential that we work together to stay informed about your child’s academic progress. I encourage you to regularly check the Focus Parent Portal, which provides real-time updates on grades, assignments, and areas where additional support may be needed. If you haven’t yet accessed the portal, please contact the school office for assistance. Another key factor in student success is consistent attendance. Please monitor your child’s attendance closely and ensure they arrive on time each day. Missing school can disrupt their ability to keep up with lessons, so it’s important we stay proactive about this. Additionally, we ask that students bring their laptops to school fully charged every day. This is essential for participating in our digital learning environment, and it’s important that students come prepared each morning. To maintain focus and ensure a positive school culture, parents should also be conducting random checks on student phones to monitor for inappropriate activity. We encourage you to periodically check your child’s phone usage at home. At home, it is beneficial to establish consistent routines that support learning, such as ensuring your child reads for at least 30 minutes every evening. This simple habit can help improve their literacy skills and instill a love for learning. Lastly, please remember to check in on your child’s emotional and mental well-being. Their overall happiness and health are just as important as their academic progress, and we encourage open communication to ensure they feel supported. If you have any concerns, our counseling team is always available to offer guidance.
Thank you for your continued partnership in helping your child succeed. Together, we can build a strong foundation for their future growth.

At Home Support
1. Parent Portal Sign Up
The best way to know live data of your student's performance is through the parent portal! Here you can see grades, attendance, discipline referrals, teacher notes, and testing information in live time. For your reference, below you will find the attachment to sign up. I highly recommend this for all parents!
2. Inappropriate Activity
Parents, there is an increase of inappropriate activity happening on/off campus. We need your help! Vaping is a trend that tends to be popular for some students. Not cool. Rest assured, the discipline team and I take this issue very seriously. To this date, I have fully implemented the SDOC Code of Conduct matrix (established by SDOC) and completed random searches. Please help us in searching your student bags and not permit these illegal items on campus.
3. 30 Minutes of Reading- Evening
Parents, ALL students should read 30 minutes (minimum) each evening to improve literacy. Please help us by establishing evening procedures at home to include a structured time of student reading. Whether it be an ebook, online website, actual book, or magazines, reading is fundamental to learning. Our school media center is always opened and ready to have books checked out. More so, this opportunity also includes a mobile book cart during lunches in the cafeteria on Wednesdays.
