Magnet Office Summer Updates

The 2022-2023 School Year has officially come to a close, which means Ms. Laboca and myself (Mr. Villalobos) have officially completed our first year as the Magnet Coordinator and Clerk for Stevenson! It is a privilege for the both of us to serve our community and to help our school grow in capacity and in quality. We take pride in the many new programs and enhancements that we have added to our campus this year. Through adding robotics competitions, soccer club for 6th grade, and making connections and partnerships with various engineering based entities, our students are offered great opportunities to explore and take advantage of our STEM based programs and extracurricular activities. In my personal experience, it delights me to build relationships and interactions with both parents and students. Having the chance to offer students these experiences and opportunities is something I value greatly. However, this is only the start. This year, the magnet office has made plans for the near future which we are excited to execute. We take away many learning experiences and great memories from our first year, but we are ready and eager for the next.

We are very excited to launch this year's Dragon Camp and to meet so many of our brand new students! Our mission with Dragon Camp is to introduce our students to our extensive Stevenson Campus and to have them participate in "Project-based" activities to prepare them for what is to come in their 6th grade year. It is a great way to transition them into our school and serves as a segue from elementary school to middle school. If your student is free this summer and is looking for something to do (aside from cleaning the house), please scan the QR code in the fliers above to enroll them into our Dragon Camp. We are eager to get them started at Stevenson Middle School!

The Algebra/Bio Summer Bridge Program is also right around the corner which we've been looking forward to for a few weeks now. For those who are new here, the Summer Bridge Program is an exclusive program in which selected students are taught and evaluated to determine if they are ready to take advanced courses such as Algebra and Biology for their 7th grade school year. This invitation comes from overall performance in their academic school year and from teacher recommendations, so it it essential for students to work diligently throughout the year. For those that were invited to the summer bridge camp, please remember:

- Classes are from June 6th - July 3rd

- Times are from 8:30 AM - 2:30 PM

- Breakfast and Lunch are provided

- Students have free dress, but dress code is still in play.

-Classes are from Monday - Thursday

We thank you for taking the time to bring your students to our summer camps. We are glad to offer these opportunities and watch our students grow as well as see our families proud.

I want to recognize all of our parents and families for all of the support you show your students throughout the year. By supporting them, you support us since they are a reflection of our school and what we stand for. Our goal is to make the most well-rounded student and to bring out all of their potential. We appreciate our parents and all of you do for our students and our campus. To keep Stevenson as one of the highest ranked schools in the district, we want our parents to be involved and active in our school. Here are ways in which you can participate and continue to benefit our school:

- Making sure Magnet Agreement is signed and students are following the standards and expectations of the agreement.

- Join PTO and participate in our fundraisers

- Continue to check student grades

- Remind students of your own personal expectations and translate that into their academics

- Attend Student fairs and events

- Show support at Stevenson Events

Together and as a community, we work as a team to give our students a better future and the tools necessary to succeed. Your goals for your students are no different than ours. By showing support and encouraging our students to do well, you are helping us tremendously. Lets keep doing what we do best.

Even though summer vacation has just started, it is still very important to keep your students academically active and engaged. Here at Stevenson, our very own librarian, Ms. Swanner, has taken the liberty to keep the library open to our community for continued learning and amusement. Through our library, our students will be able to participate in many activities that allow the student to be productive and engaged. It is a great opportunity and pastime for your students to adopt this summer.

We have many great plans for next year which we intend to share with you within the next following weeks/months. Consider this newsletter a catch-up and an update from us here in the Magnet Office. In the meantime, please enroll your students in our Dragon Camp if it applies to your student. If your student is participating in our Summer Bridge Program, ensure that they are ready and prepared to tackle advanced classes. If none of these programs apply to your students, please have a safe summer vacation. We will see you on enrollment day and in the near future! (TBD)
