How we are going to respond this time of year?
Resilience can help us manage the daily stresses we will encounter
- “Resilience is not a genetic trait. It is derived from the ways that children learn to think and act when faced with obstacles, large and small. The road to resilience comes first and foremost from children's supportive relationships with parents, teachers, and other caring adults. These relationships become sources of strength when children work through stressful situations and painful emotions. When we help young people cultivate an approach to life that views obstacles as a critical part of success, we help them develop resilience.”
How we can encourage other staff and our students to build resilience / things we can do on a day to day basis?
5 Ways to Cultivate Resilience - from Edutopia
Build supportive relationships with students
Encourage reflection through personal stories.
Help students (and their parents) learn from student failures.
Bring discussions about human resilience into the classroom.
Promote self-reflection through literary essays or small-group discussions.
View your goals as a journey and not a destination. This time of the year, many of us have set some resolutions or goals for ourselves. It is helpful to think of reaching those goals as a journey. A journey is on-going process. You can better appreciate the distance you have traveled and the challenges you have faced along the way. Seeing your goals as a destination results in us seeing them as an endpoint or conclusion and we are less likely to continue those habits. In short, seeing goals as a journey will help you “build the skill” of resiliency.
Bounce (or Trampoline) - 10 tips on how teens and adults can build resiliency. It is important to focus that being resilient is a skill that can be developed by everyone!
Keep a gratitude journal. Becoming/Remaining grateful changes the brain. Start and end your day with three things for which you are grateful! :)
