Kia Ora Chelsea Whānau,
Thank you to our PTA!
Our Annual Trivia night was an absolute hit thanks to our incredible PTA - What a cool event to be a part of. Krystal and the team your work does not go unnoticed, I have been part of many school fundraisers, but, Trivia night certainly takes the cake! Thank you to everyone who supported the event by attending, bidding on online auctions and donating to our auctions - with the combined efforts the PTA were able to bring in over $16,000! By the way, everyone's costumes were EPIC! Thanks for the incredible community effort.
Welcome to our new Kaiako
A very warm welcome to the three new kaiako joining our school from Term 3: Chris Walker, Prue McStay and Jude Mahoney. Each of them will be working in different spaces throughout our kura and we are so excited to have them here bringing a diverse range of skills and experience. Nau mai ki te kura o Chelsea.
Kapa Haka Festival
Did you see our kapa haka rōpu perform at the recent Kapa Haka festival? They were stunning! I was so proud of all of the hard work and dedication shown by our tamariki and our kaiako. Thanks to Mrs Cross, Miss Miller and Miss Jensen for their leadership of this stunning group. Miss Jensen you are amazing on the guitar! Ka Rawe!
Matariki Soup Evening
Ka rawe! Our Matariki event was stunning. It was so lovely to see so many whānau and multiple generations attend and enjoy the evening together. A huge thank you to Miss Hedges for your organising and coordination and to Dan Harrison for always supporting us with your knowledge and kōrero - we really value and appreciate this.
Community Consultation
Our Community Consultation is still live and closes on the 5th of July, you can find this on HERO. Please take some time to contribute to this to help us plan for the future.
Kindo
To streamline our systems, we are moving to only accepting payments via Kindo. This will come into effect from Term 4 but, we encourage you to get on board with Kindo now. Please see the information below to connect up your Kindo account and make the most out of their new app.
The new Kindo App is Here
The myKindo App has been redesigned from the ground up, focusing on user feedback and the needs of busy parents. The new app offers a more intuitive navigation, faster performance, and secure transactions, making it easier than ever to manage your child's school expense.
With the new Kindo app, you can
- Order lunches, complete forms and make payments in just a few taps
- Navigate effortlessly with our intuitive, user-friendly design
- Enjoy lightning-fast performance and secure transactions
- Stay informed with notifications about the things that matter most to you
You might need to update your password
Kindo is compliant with critical security and privacy standards set out by the Ministry of Education's 'Safer Technology for Schools (ST4S)' initiative. That means some parents may need to update their password when they log in to the new app.
Enjoy the term break with your tamariki, be safe, have fun and see you all back here for an exciting Term 3!
Ngā mihi nui,
Chrissy Wakeman
Tumuaki of Chelsea Primary School
Tumuaki - Chelsea Primary School - Introducing our new Kaiako
Prue McStay
Kia Ora, I'm delighted to be joining Chelsea Primary as a Classroom Release Teacher in Term 3. I graduated with my Masters 9 years ago and still absolutely adore teaching as much today as I did back then. I see my role as a kaiako as a true privilege. My goal is always to create a nurturing classroom where my students feel safe and cared for, so that they are in the best environment to reach their full potential. My motto has always been: settled children learn better! I live locally with my husband and our gorgeous 2 year old daughter. I am so looking forward to spending more time in my community and hope to meet you soon.
Jude Mahoney
Kia ora. My name is Jude Mahoney and throughout many years I've thoroughly enjoyed teaching all levels from NE - Year 8, along with Senior Management roles and a Deputy Principal position.
Currently, as a lifestyle choice, I enjoy working part- time, as it enables me the opportunity to have the pleasure of working with children and to be in a school environment whilst having the time to pursue other activities. Nowadays, I also have the time to play golf, garden, travel and to spend quality time with family and friends.
Among my many interests, I enjoy most sports, and in particular, I'm an avid fan of netball, especially after years of loving the game as a player, umpire and coach.
Whilst enjoying relieving at Chelsea School last term, I was impressed with the staff and children, and felt that the school had a positive tone and a stimulating learning environment , so I feel both excited and privileged to be able to take on a new working and learning role for the rest of 2024.
Chris Walker
I was born and raised just outside Christchurch – a true-blue Cantabrian (but let’s not talk about the 2024 Crusaders!). I taught at Oaklands Primary School for five years before embarking on overseas adventures. This journey included working as an ICT Educational Advisor in Dubai, walking the 800 km Camino across Spain, living in Paris, and teaching/parenting HIV orphans in India. In 2011, I returned to Christchurch and took up a job at Russley Primary School, where I worked for the next 13 years. During my time there, I taught a variety of levels and served as the Head of Performing Arts. Last year, in search of another adventure, I headed off to teach in a tiny isolated mining town in far North Queensland. From there, I found my way to Auckland, and it is a great privilege for me to be teaching all the fantastic kids at Chelsea School!
Te Reo
Ngā mihi nui e te whānau! Thanks to all of those who were able to attend our Matariki Soup Night last week! The soup was delicious, the Kapa Haka was awesome and the weather could not have been better. Ngā mihi also to Dan Harrison for speaking and teaching us a little bit more about what Matariki is. Next term brings Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori- watch this space for some exciting activities and an assembly!
Team Updates
Kākano
What a great term! We're looking forward to a busy Term 3, with the start of our EOTC adventures, Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, Poetry Recital and much more! We hope you have a restful and relaxing break- see you next term!
Pakiaka
We are halfway through the school year already - wow! It has certainly been a jam-packed term full of learning and fun. Thank you to our wonderful whānau for your support this term. From attending parent conferences, watching cross-country, coming along to our Mother’s Day afternoon, helping with Matariki soup night, and attending our quiz to help raise money for the school. We appreciate you.
All children have their term 2 learning stories published now. If you haven’t already, please read these with your child and leave a comment - it’s a great opportunity to celebrate your child’s learning and success. Our hub poetry recitals are in week 1 next term - all children have their poems and have been practicing in class. We encourage children to practice over the holidays. A letter went home yesterday with information on this. Any questions - please email us.
The children have loved celebrating Matariki over the past few weeks. Our team rotation was certainly a highlight with pea planting, star wand making, kites, and star art.
We say farewell to our lovely Mrs Pine! We hope to see her back for relieving sometime soon. A huge welcome to Mr Walker who has joined Pakiaka Hub 1 - please pop in and hi!
We are looking forward to seeing you all back for a fun-filled term 3! Have a safe and wonderful holiday break. Stay warm!
Rito
And the end is nearly here! What a productive term we have had, with so much amazing learning! A well-deserved holiday is definitely called for.
Next term our Inquiry learning will be around the upcoming Olympic Games for the first few weeks and then we will be moving on to Sustainable practices. Our big idea is “Think globally, act locally” and we will be looking at what we already do as a school, how we can improve this and what else we can be doing.
We will also be holding a Poetry Slam at the end of the term. As groups, we will be investigating Choral Verse and what different techniques we can implement and then we will be presenting these poems. Because the poems will be done in groups it means those not so confident can still be part of the Poetry Slam, but they are not necessarily thrust into the limelight.
Have a wonderful break with your families, keep safe and see you back before we know it!
Māhuri
Kia ora whānau, as another term closes, we can reflect on the past couple of weeks. North Harbour Sport ran an incredible two days of bike skills for our learners and catered for both experienced riders as well as those who were beginners to cycling. We were incredibly proud of the determination and resilience showed by those children who had never ridden a bike before. The smile on their faces as their confidence grew throughout the session was so lovely to see! I'm sure some families had their child come home and ask for a bike for their birthday or Christmas!
Our Matariki evening was a huge success and a great way to connect with each other over soup and performances from our Kapa Haka groups. Thanks so much to those families who provided soup. There was a huge variety to choose from making it hard to decide which ones to try!
Thank you to Miss Jensen, Mrs Cross and Ms Miller for the time and effort they put into preparing the Kapa Haka group for the Matariki Festival. The children performed so well at Birkdale Intermediate with lots of support from whānau.
Next term, look out for camp paperwork coming up. There will be a number of forms that will need to be filled in and returned back to school. In the first few weeks of Term 3, we will also have another fundraising bake sale. Year 5s and those year 6s who missed out on contributing will be asked to bring some home baking to sell. The last bake sale was a huge success thanks to the generosity of year 6 whānau baking up a storm!
We hope you enjoyed reading your child/ren's learning stories. These are a great way to celebrate successes, especially if you read it with your child and leave a comment. Next term, children will be writing their own learning stories so look out for these!
Thank you for your continued support of our Chelsea learning community. Have a wonderful end of term break.
