Mary Hogan Family Newsletter
Update from Principal Jen Kravitz
September 20, 2024
Dear Mary Hogan Families,
It has been another week of beautiful fall weather and we are all enjoying the warm days outside and sunshine, since we know colder days are around the corner.
This week, student have been awesome caring Hawks in so many ways. 2nd graders have been working so hard to make sure that they are taking care of others in the hallways, walking quietly and with their hands by their sides. While this seems like a small thing, when we have so many classes moving through the halls at lunch time it makes a huge difference in the whole school.
All students in classes have been taking care of themselves and others in their learning. Kindergarteners were careful learners this week, using new materials just as they were to be used. 3rd graders were listening to one another and building on their math knowledge in class. 5th graders were carefully balancing in PE, supporting and encouraging their classmates to try new poses. There were so many more awesome things happening.
I can't wait to see what next week brings!
đź’™, Jen

News from School
Rescheduled Options Based Drill
Due to the safety concern that occurred on Thursday, we rescheduled our options based drill to Wednesday 10/25 at 9.30am. I shared this information about the drill in an email on 9/16. I have updated it to reflect our new date. Please read it and talk with your child(ren) about this drill.
Recess Fun
Students have been having a TON of fun at recess. Recess is such an important time for our students. They get outside, they get to move around and see friends. Just as importantly, they are learning key skills about how to enter play, invite friends to play, how to sort out the rules of a game, how to play fair, and how to balance competition with fun. These moments of practice matter a lot to them, and it is so fun for me to see how much they grow each month and each year.
Ask your child what they did at recess and what feels tricky about recess. Help them think about how to handle set backs and encourage them to try new things.
What's Happening in Español
Hola estimadas familias,
In Spanish class, students are practicing routines in the classroom to be kind and safe. They are learning how rules and routines help us to organize ourselves, and how it connects with other things. Therefore, how to follow directions in Spanish to do things or to get to an object or a place.
We also celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15th. to October 15th.) by reading and singing popular songs in Spanish. There are more songs and videos on my website at MHS to keep practicing.
Con cariño,
Señora Jiménez
What's Happening in Music
Hello, from the music room!
This month in music, students in all grades are learning to listen and respond to the “tongue drum”; many “ooh” and “aah” the soothing sound as we settle into directions.
Our inquiry is “Music Inspires Movement” and students of all grades have been moving in many ways. In addition to finger plays and circle games, students of all grades have each been learning and refining a folk dance, in the contradance style.
From Kindergarten to 5th, they have learned: Shoofly, Old Brass Wagon, Rural Felicity, La Bastringue, Zip It Up, and The Virginia Reel. Maybe your child can teach YOU their new folk dance!
