Students participate in mock Georgia United Nations Assembly on St. Simons Island
As a part of The GLOBE Academy’s inaugural Civics Club, seventeen middle school students, advised by Mr. Marcus Johnson, participated in a three day mock Georgia United Nations Assembly on St. Simons Island earlier this week.
Students gained firsthand experience in the out-workings of international relations and honed their skills in leadership, critical thinking, collaboration, negotiation, diplomacy, research, resolution writing, and public speaking. GLOBE's delegation proudly represented eight countries where Spanish, French, or Mandarin are primary languages. The students researched, authored, and debated resolutions of vital importance to their respective countries, addressing pressing global challenges such as extreme poverty, climate change, artificial intelligence, international trade, emigration, discrimination, and the United Nations veto override.
GLOBE are so proud of all the participants! Among the 60 countries competing, GLOBE achieved outstanding success with four resolutions ranking in the top 10 and seven in the top 20, surpassing all other private and public schools in this category and demonstrating exceptional academic excellence and strategic problem-solving. Students developed a diverse set of important skills that will play a crucial role in their future academic achievements and career aspirations, enabling them to adapt to new challenges, think critically, and excel in various professional environments.
Belgium: Royal Fallen and Eshan Parajuli; Canada: Maliha Dao and Henry Cottrell; France: Nicolas Kirouac, Sung Men, Sara Haddad; Haiti: George Jeffers and Griffin Byars; Luxembourg: Aarya Patel and Ethan Lindquist; Mexico: Mason Francois and Asher Padron; Mongolia: Julia Samalin and Yanglha Lamo; Peru: Lucas Teixeira-Staples and Ian Lauterbach.
A special thank you to GLOBE PTCC for providing support toward the transportation costs.
Read Across America Day on Monday (grades K–5)
Read Across America Day takes place on Monday, March 3. Its theme will be - ‘Celebrating Diverse and Exceptional Readers’. That day, Kindergarten through fifth grade students can choose to dress up as a character from either a book that represents their own identity, a book featuring a child with exceptionalities, and/or any other school-friendly book that resonates with them. Need inspiration? Check out the book lists here, here, and here.
Dress-down Thursdays start March 6
Help our 8th grade students raise money for their trip to Savannah by bringing $1 to dress down (out of uniform) each Thursday from March 6 to April 3. Please adhere to DeKalb County dress code rules. Parent volunteers will be collecting money at the school entrances of both campuses. Please make every effort to bring the exact change.
Important notes: Due to a field trip on March 6, 3rd grade students must come to school in uniform or spirit wear/jeans. Also, on March 20, French students will need to wear the recommended attire for the Francophonie celebration.
You can download the flyer here or click on the image. Thank you for your support!
Ramadan Kareem
The month of Ramadan begins on the evening of Friday, February 28. Observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community, we would like to wish all who celebrate, a wonderful Ramadan.

Black History Month
BHM Spirit Week continues at Upper Campus this week. Download the flyer here. Thank you to everyone who came to watch our Black History Month celebration today. Video footage will be available in next week's newsletter. Below, we have included a few pics from today's Black History Month exhibition in the cafeteria, and also some pictures of the wonderful door decorations at UC.
Upper Campus Clinic
The clinic is in need of gently used uniform pants, skorts, skirts and a few shirts for unexpected/emergency circumstances. All sizes are welcomed for both young ladies and young men for UC students. Please make sure any donated items are clean (washed) with no rips or tears. Thank you in advance, your contributions are greatly appreciated.
Scoliosis Screening for 6th and 8th grade students
Scoliosis screening will take place tomorrow, Thursday, February 27. Both 6th and 8th grade will be screened. Makeup day will be Friday, February 28. See last week's newsletter for further details. If you have any questions and/or concerns please email Nurse Assistant Davalyn White.
Art
Eighth grade art students studied the artist George Seurat and his Pointillism style of painting. They created small paintings on canvas boards and we are pleased to share a few examples below.
Lavender Sunset by Emma Dargent Cham, Sunset fishing by Aidan Raymond, Pine tree panorama by Layla Milarker, Woodland Trees by Enzo Catinella, and Full moon by Carmina Rho.
*The titles were created by Ms Allen for identification purposes only.
Lower Campus
Black History Month Spirit Week continues this week at LC. Click here to download the schedule for Thursday and Friday.
Lower Campus students enjoyed listening to a Black History Month storyteller on Monday. There are also lots of beautiful door decorations around campus. Check out the images below.
Guest readers to visit LC
Two guest readers from the Department of Education’s ‘Let's Read, Georgia’ initiative are coming to do read-alouds in English classrooms on Thursday. They will be reading books by black authors/illustrators in celebration of Black History Month.
Exceptional Children's Week
Update: We have moved the celebration of Exceptional Children’s Week to the week of April 14. Therefore, Read Across America Day will no longer coincide with it. Read Across America Day will still occur on Monday, March 3. For information, read the article featured earlier in this newsletter.
Library
When returning books to the LC library, students must place their books on the return cart. They should not put them on a shelf or in a bin. If books aren’t returned properly, they may not get scanned back into the library and are still checked out to the student according to the library system. Students will still be responsible for their books if they do not return them correctly. Please remind your students to return their books on the return cart. Thank you.
Independent Learning Day - Friday, March 7
A friendly reminder that next Friday, March 7, is a Teacher Work Day. All students will be learning from home. Kindergarten through third grade lead teachers will send assignments home with students on Thursday, March 6.
Lower Campus Clinic
If you need to give your child medication to get them to school, please take a pause and consider if your child is well enough to be at school. Be mindful that the nurse will send them home if they are not able to participate in class. If the nurse calls you, please promptly collect your child so they are not stuck at school for longer than necessary. While Nurse Kate is a great hug giver, she is no substitute for home and a warm bed :)
The clinic is in need of gently used uniform pants and for unexpected/emergency circumstances. We are in need of pants, shorts and skirts in sizes 6, 7, and 8. Please make sure any donated items are clean (washed) with no rips or tears. Thank you in advance, your contributions are greatly appreciated.

We're looking to pull anything in bad condition and outdated/politically incorrect books. If we find stray library books in the process, that's a bonus! If you would like to volunteer, please contact Ms. Stowe here.
The two teachers looking for help with this are Ms. Rembert and Ms. Hilton, who are both 3rd-grade English leads on the Spanish and Mandarin tracks, respectively.
