The River Hawk
Rio Norte News - October 25, 2024
A Note From the Principal
Good Morning River Hawk Families,
We had an incredible spirit week with so much participation, especially on Crocs and Socks Day, that Mrs. Welch and I couldn't even get all the pictures. Please enjoy many taken by both of us throughout the week by clicking to view THIS google photo album! The fun and festive banners that Yearbook made start the photos we captured for each day. We ended Friday with very high participation on our wear purple day in honor of Valencia High School who invited our River Hawks to join at their football game last night. What a great evening it was! Special thanks to our ASB, our Yearbook (and their advisors, Mrs. Welch and Ms. Bretthauer) and to the Valencia High School Administration and ASB for all of their work in making Rio Norte's Spirit Week amazing!
For those of you that have your first child at junior high this year, unlike most elementary schools, we do allow students to wear school appropriate costumes on Halloween. Please be sure to carefully read through our costume guidelines if they'll be wearing one to school. We want everyone to have a great time on Thursday.
Finally, check-out the help needed for our upcoming district cross country meet and learn how to sign-up for the AMC Math 8 test if your child would like to participate. As a reminder the NJHS application period is now open.

- Halloween Costume Guidelines

Mathematical Association of America's AMC 8 Math Test
If your student has a passion for problem-solving and is interested in taking the AMC 8 test, registration is happening now through Friday, November 22, 2024. The cost is $11 and needs to be paid at the ASB window or on the WEBSTORE. The test will be given afterschool on one of the following days: January 23, January 24, or January 27, 2025!!!! The specific date will be determined once we return from winter break.
The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment.
The material covered on the AMC 8 includes topics from a typical middle school mathematics curriculum. Possible topics include but are not limited to: counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs and tables. In addition some of the later questions may involve linear or quadratic functions and equations, coordinate geometry, and other topics traditionally covered in a beginning algebra course.
Students must be in 8th grade or below and also 14.5 years or younger on the date of the exam.
For more information, please contact Mrs. Groller (Rio Norte's MathCounts Advisor) at Lgroller@hartdistrict.org or have your student come to C4. We hold our MathCounts weekly meetings on Thursdays at lunch and all interested students are welcome!
National Junior Honor Society Application OPEN until 11/4/24

*** Parents please do not apply for your student, as this is a club that promotes and encourages responsibility, leadership, character and citizenship. The application will only be open to the students using their hartdistrict email account. Please click here to view the information sheet with all the important details. Hart District Attendance Challenge
Attendance Matters.
Regular attendance is key to student success. When students are in class, they can actively engage in learning, participate in class discussions, and build important social skills.
Attendance Challenges:
To encourage and celebrate consistent attendance, we're introducing attendance challenges. These challenges offer exciting prizes, sponsored by local businesses, and encourage good habits.
First Challenge: October 8-31
Students with perfect attendance (no tardies) can enter a drawing to win AirPods.
*Learning Post Academy will explore alternative attendance recognition options for independent study students. More details coming soon.
Let's Work Together:
We believe this challenge will not only motivate students to come to school every day but also foster a sense of community and teamwork among our students. Thank you for your continued support. Together, we'll create a positive learning environment for all students.
