Message from the Principal
Kiker Families and Caretakers,
This week we kicked off our Hispanic Heritage Month! Our students will hear facts about various people in history as well as participate in various activities that include lessons in the library! This week our students are also completing their various MAP assessments and they have been working so hard to do their best work.
I also wanted to share with you that Mrs. Zilem (assistant principal) had a healthy baby boy and she and her family are home and enjoying their time together.
Keep an eye on the Upcoming Dates section below so you don't miss anything!
Thank you for your continued support,
Mrs. Abrams, M.Ed.

Welcome, Dr. Cathyrn Mitchell!
I'm super excited to be a substitute Assistant Principal here at Kiker ES. For those that don't know me, I just retired after 32 years of service from AISD. I was the principal at Gorzycki MS for the past 9 years and before that the principal at Oak Hill and J. Houston Elementary Schools. It is exciting to be back at the elementary level. I look forward to learning about the Kiker community and supporting you however I can.

From AISD:
Austin ISD is excited to announce the launch of the Austin ISD Mobile App-the one place to get real-time district news, individual campus notifications, parent and student resources, district calendars and much more.
The app will allow all AISD students, staff and families to receive notifications from the district and campuses for which they wish to subscribe. Other helpful tools include COVID-19 Screen and Go, an efficient self-screening process for users to complete before coming into contact with others or before leaving home for work or school. The screening feature is available to students, staff and visitors. The app also allows for quick access and links to:
Parent Cloud
Parent Self Serve
WheresTheBus

AISD holds a variety of sessions to share information and connect families of students who receive Special Education and 504 services. Click the title above to learn more!
Throughout the month of September our students in Kinder - 5th Grade will be completing a MAP Growth Assessment. This will be completed two additional times throughout the school year. While the teachers will utilize this data as one point of information to guide small group time, we work to ensure that the students are simply asked to do their best.
If you'd like to read a little more about the MAP Growth assessment, you can find some of those details at the link below:
Gifted and Talented Nominations
The Gifted and Talented (GT) referral window is now open and will remain open until October 7. To learn more about GT services and to submit a referral, click here for the English link. Additional languages can be found here.

Kiker Elementary collaborates with outside vendors to bring a variety of experiences to our after school program. They are all individual businesses. For that reason, specific questions about clubs, schedules, etc. should be directed towards them before contacting Kiker staff as they will have the most detailed information. You can click on the title or the graphic to the right to find out all of the details!
*A link to this document will also stay in "Popular Links" at the end of this newsletter throughout the year.

Monarch Butterfly Series
Monarch Butterfly Book Series: Discover, Learn, Soar
September 15 - October 15th is National Hispanic Heritage month. This month celebrates the contribution and achievement of Hispanic American individuals, authors, and illustrators who have influenced and enriched our society. These stories allow us all to take a journey into a different culture, language, and experience.
The books listed below can be found at the Kiker library, Austin Public Library, and online through AISD MackinVIA audio app. Read Alouds can also be found on youtube or at the Austin Public Library.
Kindergarten - Second Grade Book List
Only A Trenza Away By: Nadine Fonseca (author) Camila Carrosine (illustrator)
Isabel and Her Colores Go to School By: Alexandra Alessandri (author) Courtney Dawson (illustrator)
Colorful Mondays By: Nelson Rodríguez (Author) Leonardo Agustín Montes (Author) Rosana Faría (Illustrator), Carla Tabora (Illustrator), Lawrence Schimel (Translator)
Reflection Questions:
The time we spend together with our loved ones can help us feel connected and confident to explore the world around us. In “Only a Trenza Away” Xiomara enjoys her nightly routine of having her hair braided by her dad while he tells her colorful stories. What are some routines or traditions that your family does that helps you feel closer together?
In “Isabel and Her Colores Go To School”, Isabel is new to her school and only speaks Spanish while everyone else speaks English. How would you feel if you were in a new place and didn’t understand the kids around you? With your grown up, think of ways that you could be a good friend to someone new to your class. What would you do if they didn’t speak your language?
Hispanic Heritage can be found throughout North and South America, and many other places in the world. What is one thing you learned about Hispanic Culture from your books?
Third - Fifth Grade Book List
Planting Stories: The Life of Pura Belpré By: Anika Aldamuy Denise (Author), Paola Escobar (Illustrator)
The Wrestling Cholitas of Bolivia (Against all Odds) By: Claudia Bellante (Author), Anna Carbone (Illustrator)
Jovita Wore Pants By: Aida Salazar (Author), Molly Mendoza (Illustrator)
Reflection Questions:
Stories can be powerful tools for helping us remember the people and places that we come from. In “Planting Stories”, Pura Belpré used her gift of storytelling to share her love of Puerto Rico with others. What are some of the stories in your family that help you know more about the people and places that you come from?
Social expectations are societies “rules” about how one “should” behave/act. In “Jovita Wore Pants” and “The Wrestling Cholitas of Bolivia”, Jovita and the Cholitas made decisions to help their people that went against social expectations. In what ways can social expectations be limiting? What limitations did the characters of your books face? Are there any barriers you experience in your life?
Individuals who consistently work hard to overcome challenges (barriers) are known to have perseverance. When was the last time that you showed perseverance? How did the character of your book demonstrate perseverance?
Track Progress: Students who read every month will be acknowledged and celebrated at the end of the semester and year. To track your student’s progress please complete this form.
