A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Celebrations!
Tomorrow will be our first whole school PBIS celebration. Students have earned enough Anchor tickets to celebrate responsible, respectful, kind and safe behavior. We are so excited to have students participate in some special activities outside and enjoy time with their reading buddies. Students have been hard at work building our community and learning how important it is to work together as a team. When we are all doing our jobs at school, we have the best chances of success. We are grateful for all your support at home!
Forest Friday
Last week, we had our first Forest Friday with reading buddies. Kindergarten and third grade students partnered up to collect things in nature and create a small world. Some kids made gardens, others made houses or playforts, and some used creative energy to build something unique and beautiful. Each week, Mrs. Willette will take two classes outside to work together as reading buddies. Classroom teachers will be planning outdoor learning activities during the other times. Activities may be seasonally focused, or they may include experiences that lead to a larger culminating project. We are excited to focus on outdoor learning as a whole school community at PES, bringing an enriching hands-on experience to our students.
Gifted and Talented Update: We are so fortunate at PES to have Ms.Burch with us all day on Thursdays as our gifted and talented enrichment teacher. In addition to seeing identified students, and teaching Discovery classes to students in grades 3-5, Ms.Burch will also be running a PES Newspaper Club for students in grade five, book groups in grades 3 and 4, and supporting students and teachers in the classroom to differentiate learning for students. Any additional student learning group nominations will be based on student’s academic data and teacher recommendation. If you would like to learn more about the eligibility process for gifted and talented students, please visit the Gifted and Talented site for RSU1.
Great Start: What a blessing it is to offer Great Start to our students at PES. Great Start is a free enrichment program that takes place on Wednesdays from 8:15-9:15. This program relies on many community volunteers. We are looking for more volunteers to help during this time. Activities to supervise include outside play, art activities, board games, but are not limited to other things, such as garden club, nature trail walking, yoga. Please contact Mrs.Doran if you would be interested in helping out.
CRITICAL INFORMATION ABOUT MOSQUITO-BORNE ILLNESSES; TAKE ACTION TO REDUCE RISK
Mosquito borne illnesses on the rise in some counties in Maine:
Current Situation
In recent weeks, the Maine CDC has reported:
West Nile virus (WNV) in 15 wild birds and in one human
Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus in 4 horses, 2 emus, 1 llama, and 1 wild turkey
Jamestown Canyon Virus (JCV) in 4 mosquito pools (groups of up to 50 mosquitoes regularly tested as part of routine surveillance)
Presence of these viruses in animals indicates that mosquitos in certain regions of our state do carry the viruses and therefore pose a risk to humans.
Maine CDC has identified the following counties as being high risk: Cumberland, Kennebec, Penobscot, Somerset, and Waldo counties. All other counties are at an elevated risk at this time. All three of these viruses are spread through the bite of an infected mosquito and usually start with flu-like symptoms in humans.
The risk for getting a mosquito-borne disease is highest from dusk to dawn and when temperatures are above 50°F (especially above 60°F), since this is when mosquitoes are most active. Risk from mosquito bites is expected to continue until two hard frosts kill the mosquitoes this fall/winter. The best way to prevent mosquito-borne diseases is to prevent mosquito bites.
-Use mosquito repellent when you go outside, especially dusk to dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
-When possible wear long sleeved shirts and pants
-Remove standing water where mosquitoes breed
-make sure your screens are tight and free of holes
