Message from Mr. Kingery
Hello Art Rutkin Elementary Families,
We want to wish all our families a fun and safe spring break week starting on Monday. School will resume again on April 1st. We have had a lot to celebrate again recently at school. Our first STREAM night on Friday, March 15th was a great success. Thank you to Jill Roberts, our PSO and staff members who were all here to support a lot of fun and learning that evening. We will look forward to seeing this event grow over the years to come. Our Spring Book Fair was also a huge success! The amount raised exceeded our goal. The regional Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) was held here at Art Rutkin Elementary the next day on March 16th. Art Rutkin’s school champion team, Can I have a Dorito, did well through two rounds of pool play and finished in the top 16. Twenty 25 schools from around the Portland area were represented in the regional OBOB tournament. We are proud of all our participants.
Art Literacy: Check out Art Rutkin students’ Art Literacy projects on display now at the Tigard Public Library over spring break. Thank you to Leah Baldwin and all our Art Literacy volunteers this year!
PSO: Our PSO executive board positions are up for election in April. Our PSO is looking for community members who are ready to step into these positions and help support school events, activities and fundraising. Being part of the Art Rutkin PSO is a rewarding opportunity that requires collaboration and teamwork. We have a great deal of appreciation for our current PSO board and volunteers. Contact the PSO Board or our office to learn how you can be involved. Please fill out this Google Form (takes less than 5 minutes) to show your interest in Board Seats and Event Committees. Click here for contact information.
Garden Clean Up: We are looking for volunteers to come to school to help weed our inground and raised garden beds. This can be done on your own time any day over spring break. All Rutkin students who help out will receive a special treat during the week of April 1-5. Please send me a picture of your student in the garden with the garden bed and weeds they worked on so I know who helped during break. We look forward to getting our school garden planted soon after we return. Thank you in advance for any help you and your family are able to provide. Remember to send a picture of your student to jkingery@ttsd.k12.or.us
Safety Reminder: There is a lot of construction work in the neighborhood as you all are aware. We talk a lot about safety and making safe choices at school. Please reinforce safety in the neighborhood construction areas with your child(ren) at home. The school day includes all walking and rolling to and from school. We ask that all students make safety a priority between home and school. This means staying completely out of areas under construction and not touching any materials part of the construction. You may report any issues here at school 503 431-3500, or by directly contacting the Tigard Police Department at 503-629-0111.
Have a wonderful spring break week,
Mr. Kingery

Notes from your TAG Specialists
Talking to Children About Giftedness
Adults sometimes wonder how to talk about Talented and Gifted identification and services with children. We want students to understand what TAG is and what it means, especially as it relates to their own educational experience, but we might also worry that knowledge could create unintended pressure or even lead to social problems. When we focus on describing some specific facts around TAG (instead of sharing generalities or stereotypes, or using vague labels or language), we can help students learn about themselves in a healthy, helpful way! Here are some ideas to guide your conversations with your children:
For additional tips and ideas on talking with children about giftedness, check out the NAGC TIP Sheet here: https://nagc.org/resource/collection/77F0AE22-8EEA-4FAE-A9FB-908FC648A382/NAGC-TIP_Sheet-Talking_with_Your_Child_About_G.pdf

Art Literacy Spotlight
For this project, the students learned about printmaking. They explored techniques of creating a printing surface, how to roll the ink on the board, and how to transfer that image onto the paper to create a winter inspired piece of artwork.
The student's artwork is displayed at the City of Tigard Public Library! Stop by and check it out in person!
Chess Wizards Spring Term Information
Is your child interested in being part of the chess club and missed winter term or does your child want to continue on with spring term?
