Leland Aces International Baccalaureate Evaluation Visit!
Every 5 years an IB school gets evaluated in order to be reauthorized as IB! Our evaluating team (from South Africa and India) joined us virtually this week. The team met with students, teachers, parents, administration, and members of the board of education. The process included 16 meetings, 14 classrooms visits, and thousands of submitted documents highlighting every aspect of the teaching and learning that happens in the Primary Years Program! (PYP/IB Grades K-5)
We are happy to inform that we received an extremely positive report from our evaluating team. They were highly impressed with the teaching and learning happening in our PYP, stating that we truly embody the vision of the IB. They said we are "implementing our program with fidelity and integrity," and outlined our Program Development Plan and our focus on transdisciplinary learning as exemplary. They were very impressed with our students, noting they were highly engaged in their learning, they embodied the Learner Profile Attributes, they were aware of national and global issues, and they feel empowered to take action to make our community and world a better place.
Thank you to Ellen Keen for preparing all of the details. Thank you to all of our PYP teachers and staff! Your hard work and personal commitment to your students every day are to credit for the phenomenal outcome! Be sure to thank a PYP staff member!

Wrapping up an IB unit & promoting global mindedness with guest speaker Jody Gottlieb
Grandparent volunteer, Marsh, brought in a special treat for our first-grade math students.
"The first graders are learning all forms of measurement and what we can measure. While teaching the lesson, I peeked over at Marsh and knew we could do something great for the kids.
Marsh brought in all her special gingerbread books, a puppet, baking gear, and an assortment of measuring tools. Every child in 1st grade got to mix, measure, stir and sing. Second graders got to bring home dough. Be careful the gingerbread men don't run away!" - Mrs. Suttmann
Two Leland students were named Career Tech Center Student of the Quarter!
John Boonstra, Sharon Vreeland, and Rebekah Tenbrink visited Leland school this last Wednesday, November 30 as representatives of Leelanau Investing For Teens and the Leelanau County Substance Misuse Prevention Coalition to present "Dead on Arrival," a short film about fentanyl's deadly role in the U.S. illicit drug market.
Students in grades 9-12 participated in a viewing of the film and then had a panel discussion led by the Prevention Specialists. An additional community presentation occurred at 7pm on the same day in the PAC.
The film, "Dead on Arrival", is focused on the people at risk of fentanyl poisoning - from which 65,000 people died in 2021. Those at risk include casual users, partygoers, experimenters, regular users, and even unsuspecting bystanders who may come into contact with this powerful opioid. The film by Natural High explores the stories of four families who lost loved ones to fentanyl in various ways and its more significant impact on communities of all types.
The group is developing other community presentations on relevant topics that will be offered to schools in the area. Stay tuned for additional information.
