AMS Brain Bowl
The AMS Brain Bowl team has started practicing on Mondays in the library during lunch. Brain Bowl is a team-based academic competition on a variety of subjects held by SOU every year and is open to any 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student. Questions are on mathematics, language arts, science, history and civics, arts, and technology. Rarely does one student know it all, so the team relies on everyone working together. Last year, the small - just one 7th grader and three 6th graders - but mighty AMS team was the Division A Middle School Brain Bowl Champions.
Permission forms are still available from James Johnson in Room 57 (the Academic Support Center) or the library. The deadline for permission forms is December 10. Starting in mid-January, the AMS team will compete weekly against a different middle school. If you have any questions, contact James Johnson by email (james.johnson@ashland.k12.or.us) or phone at 541-482-1611 ext. 3267.
AMS Clay Club
After school Clay Club is starting again at AMS! This will be a weekly after-school opportunity. Space will be limited, and students will be selected to participate on a first-come, first-served basis.
Beginning in January, Clay Club will meet on Mondays or Fridays from 3:10-4:15 in room 62. Students will be assigned one day of the week to participate, depending on their availability.
If your student is interested in Clay Club, they can pick up a permission slip in the AMS main office. The slip must be returned to the office so that their spot can be reserved.
Please reach out to Rosie Russell with questions.

AMC 8 Math Competition January 22, 2024
The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment.
The material covered on the AMC 8 includes topics from a typical middle school mathematics curriculum. Possible topics include but are not limited to counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs and tables. In addition, some of the later questions may involve linear or quadratic functions and equations, coordinate geometry, and other topics traditionally covered in a beginning algebra course.
After completing the survey and expressing your desire to take the examination, please submit $10 to Mr. Lambert. I'm sorry, there are no refunds due to absences, etc.
Girls Basketball & Wrestling
Now is also the time to register for Girls Basketball and Wrestling. Students must be registered by the start of practice to participate.

Cubs Corner Crafting
At Cubs Corner the students do crafts and play games during lunch time. We are in need of any crafts that you might have at home: pipe Cleaners, pom-poms, popsicle sticks, ribbon, felt pieces, bead materials for making bracelets, etc. Great time to clean out your craft supplies.
We are also in need of any games (in good condition ) and playing cards.
Please drop off donations at the front desk with Karin.
Colder Mornings at AMS
As the weather changes and temperatures drop, please remember that there is no supervision for students at AMS until 8:00 a.m. The doors automatically open at that time. Please consider adjusting your drop-off time accordingly so students are not waiting outside in the rain or snow.
