Principal's Message
Happy Wintery Sunday, Tiger Families!
Our staff had the most amazing In-Service Day on Wednesday, working with intention to further our School Improvement Work. We want to be the BEST high school in Washington State, centering around our mission statement that we developed collaboratively in October.
It reads: “Our mission is to create a high school environment where relationships are leveraged to foster high levels of learning, ensuring that EACH and EVERY student feels safe, seen, valued, and accepted. Through engaging, rigorous, and relevant experiences, including diverse course offerings that prepare students for trade, work, college, and military service, we empower students to take ownership of their personal growth. We strive to be a community where students enjoy attending, feel connected to our school, and actively care for one another.”
We worked in collaborative teams to plan out our next steps around the following themes: Relationships, Instruction, Assessment, Intervention, Behavioral Expectations/Response, Celebrations, and Safety. Each team identified one concrete next step that we can accomplish before the end of the year. We are formalizing a written summary and will share next week when it's polished and ready. In addition, the administrative team presented our School Improvement Plan to the school board on Monday, which you can review here: document and recorded presentation. We are on fire to grow for our students and community and always welcome your input!
It looks as if snow may be in our forecast this week. When inclement weather occurs, it may be necessary to implement a two-hour late start, snow routes for buses or a school closure. Safety is our primary concern when making these decisions. Please use your discretion. Even if a school is open, parents and guardians may use their own judgment whether it is safe to send their child(ren) to school. Weather-related absences are excused when reported to the school by a parent or guardian. Late starts In the event of a late start, school begins two hours later than normal. If a weather-related, two-hour late start occurs on a Wednesday late-start day, the teacher collaboration time will be canceled and school will start two hours later than the regular (Mon./Tues./Thurs./Fri.) start time. You can call in to our information line at 360-885-5343, and access snow routes for buses at: battlegroundps.org/page/bus-routes or by calling First Student: 360-841-7099, ext. 1.
Have a great week, and stay warm! (Students, see Ms. Main in the Main Office if you need a winter coat!).
Heather Ichimura, BGHS Proud Principal

District News
Remember to vote by Feb. 11!
Battle Ground Public Schools is asking voters to consider a replacement education and operations levy on the Feb. 11 ballot. Local levy funding helps to cover things the state doesn’t fully pay for, such as student safety, transportation, special education, updated curriculum, mental health and nursing supports, sports, arts and much more. Levy funding currently provides around 13% of the district’s overall budget.
Visit our website to learn more about the replacement levy, create a personalized cost estimate for your property and to view a video presentation. If you are eligible to vote but are not yet registered, you can still do so in person at the Clark County Elections office in Vancouver until 8 p.m. on election night.
Survey results on cellphone use, start times and school libraries
Last fall, Battle Ground Public Schools conducted a ThoughtExchange to gather ideas about student use of cellphones during school, school start times, school libraries and more. More than 2,200 people responded, including parents/guardians, students, staff members and community members. Thank you to everyone who participated! Your input helps guide decisions on these topics. Visit the district website to view the full survey results and read the key findings.
February school lunch menus
February school breakfast and lunch menus are available via Nutrislice and the district website. Meal expenses can be paid through InTouch Receipting.

Parents and guardians can learn more on the district’s parent resources webpage, including managing technology at home, resources for digital citizenship and setting up parental controls.
Running Start opportunities
The Running Start program allows students who have completed 10th or 11th grade but have not yet started the next grade to enroll in college courses tuition-free, earning both high school and college credits simultaneously. This program can help students get a head start on their college education while saving money. New for this summer: Students who have completed 10th grade can now participate in Running Start during the summer term, taking up to 10 credits.
Fee waivers are available for students who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals, ensuring cost is not a barrier to participation. For more details, including how to apply and access fee waivers, please contact your school counselor or visit the Running Start webpage.

Report Incidents Anonymously with Safe Schools
Please report bullying, intimidation, harassment, threats and safety concerns using our anonymous reporting system. Reporters can remain anonymous. Emergencies should always be reported to 911. Learn more about emergency procedures and safety protocols.
Report, don’t repost
If you see or hear of a possible threat, please report it to law enforcement directly and/or to school staff. This is the best and most helpful action because it begins an investigation and helps to limit the potential for misinformation to spread. Reposting or sharing a threat on social media in an attempt to warn others spreads the threat farther from its original source and may cause unnecessary alarm and fear. You can report bullying, intimidation, harassment, threats and safety concerns using our anonymous reporting system. Emergencies should always be reported to 911.
