MDE Redesigning Assessment Reports – Your Voice Matters!
Families, educators, and students (grades 8–12): Do you have ideas about how the statewide assessment results, like the MCA, could be shared with the public and school and district staff?
MDE is beginning the process of redesigning the statewide assessment reports. This includes evaluating how student results are organized and communicated (including the labels like "does not meet” or “exceeds" the standards, and what the reports will look like for new academic standards). The redesigned reports will be seen for the first time in summer and fall 2025.
Please take the survey to share your experience. It should take no longer than 15 minutes. The survey is now open for submissions until May 19. Responses are completely anonymous.

Your voice is important to this process. We appreciate your time and consideration.

Here's What's Happening at Humboldt
Music Department
Humboldt Families, our music teacher and department need your support! Please read the message from Mr.Barnes below and vote DAILY.
"I am very humbled and honored to share that I'm one of 10 teachers nominated for the Manilow Foundation Award in Minnesota. Voting has started, and I wanted to reach out to you all. You can vote daily! Winning this award would make a significant difference for our student musicians at Humboldt. The winning teacher will receive $10,000, a $5,000 cash prize for the teacher and $5,000 credit to help purchase new instruments. Not to mention, also getting the opportunity to meet Barry Manilow in person to accept the award if I win! If you know me, I am not usually the type of person to shamelessly promote myself, but what a great opportunity this would be!
Your support through daily voting and spreading the word would mean the world to me and my students. Thank you for considering!"
Humboldt Spanish Debate Team
Hello from the Minnesota Urban Debate League!
We are excited to share the results of your Debate en Español (DEE) team’s first tournament of the season with you. This is our second year back in person, and our community continues to grow. It was a pleasure to welcome even more students from across the Twin Cities to showcase their fluency and knowledge of the Spanish language.
Your team, with the guidance of coach, Lisa Serrano, has been working hard to prepare for debates all spring. The topic this year is about US-Cuban relations, which was chosen by DEE debaters and coaches themselves, with the debates held entirely in Spanish!
Students have a chance to earn speaker awards and team awards at tournaments. Speaker awards honor students’ individual performance; team awards are given for the best win/loss record. Your students went home with both types of awards!
Congratulations to Briany & Romina, who dove right in at their first debate tournament ever, and ended up as the undefeated champions of the principiante division! Briany & Romina performed so well that they also won the 2nd and 3rd speaker awards! What a success for their first debate competition!
Briany & Romina shared that they joined debate to learn something new about participating in group discussions. “Those are important communication skills to have,” Briany and Romina added. They aren’t sure what they think about the topic yet, but reported they were “looking forward to seeing what we think at the end of the tournament after debating about it with other people,” concluding, “we’re excited to actually debate and be in a tournament after all the practicing we’ve been doing!”
It has been a pleasure to be part of your student’s educational journey this year. We can’t wait to see what next year brings for Humboldt.

Honors French Students take on France
Over spring break, our French Teacher, Ms. Lafleur, chaperoned 4 students to Paris and a few other cities. The students all had an amazing trip and were able to use their french and immerse themselves in Parisian culture.
Community and Family Engagement
Communities in the Schools, Welcome Sage!
Hello Humboldt families! My name is Sage and I am the new site coordinator for Communities in Schools. I wanted to introduce myself and put out a reminder of what our organization does for students and families.
I was born and raised in Seattle, Wasington but have lived in the Wisconsin/Minnesota area for about ten years now. I come from a background in social work; specifically youth development and mental health. I am so excited to be joining Communities in Schools and the Humboldt community.
Communities in Schools' mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. As site coordinator, I work with students both individually and in groups to achieve goals in attendance, academics, and social skills. Students may be referred to me through their counselor, social worker, staff member, by a family member, or they may refer themselves. In addition, I help coordinate a food pantry and clothing closet here in room 1114 at Humboldt. If your student or family is in need of clothing items or shelf-stable food products, please have them come to my room and I will help get them what they need. Finally, I help to coordinate the Every Meal program. This is a program that sends home bags of food every Friday with your student to help families bridge the food gap on the weekends. This program does not require enrollment; your student may simply stop in room 1114 on Friday afternoons and grab a bag (or a couple of bags) to bring home.
Please see our Communities in Schools website if you would like to explore further what our organization does: https://www.cistwincities.org/
Please also feel free to contact me via email/text/phone call at:
smiller@cistwincities.org or (612) 440-9040
Thank you all and I can't wait to meet you and your students and join the Humboldt Family!
CPTO-Senior Send Off
Our Community, Parent and Teacher Organization will again be hosting a Senior Send Off for the class of 2024. We are looking for parents or family members of seniors, or any Humboldt parents that would like to help volunteer at the event. The event will be on May 31st, after the seniors last day. We are so proud of our students and want to make sure they all feel celebrated.
If you're unable to volunteer your time but would like to donate to our event, we'll happily accept monetary donations, prizes or even food/drinks. If you have a connection with a business or organization and you think they might want to help, have them contact Beth Mork or Dulce Meza.
We appreciate all of our families and hope that you'll help us provide a wonderful Send Off for these students.
