NEWS & NOTES January 6, 2023
Marty's Minute
Welcome back! I hope you enjoyed your winter break and are ready to tackle the rest of the school year.
Looking ahead this month, I hope you can take some time and participate in the many assemblies and projects for Martin Luther King Jr. Day throughout our schools and join me in learning more about Treaty Day on Thursday, January 26th.
Thank you for your continued dedication and hard work for students in our district. The work you do matters and makes a difference every single day. Happy 2023!
Caring for Kids at Christmas
The Caring for Kids Team, in partnership with our Family Navigators (Becca Larsen, Summer Cooper, and Julie Maron) organized this year's giving, and these teams also manage our district's clothing closet throughout the year!
In an effort to raise money, the team placed donation boxes at all of the schools so visitors and staff could donate to the cause and raised $680 in total from the donation boxes. Dry Creek raised the most money ($440) and will be celebrated with coffee and goodies being delivered to the school on January 13th. Thank you to EVERYONE who donated time, money, and gifts and helped spread the word about this great giving opportunity!
Peninsula Performs! Presents: Artcycle with Marine Debris
In this class, students sorted and cleaned marine debris while discussing the environmental impact of waste items. Together, they learned about sculptures and generated ideas around creating three-dimensional collaborative pieces using wire and/or glue.
Students enjoyed thinking up different ways to create three-dimensional pieces that could be worn, hung on the wall, or placed as sculptures! Using recycled and waste items as media raised consciousness about the items we use and throw away. What a great lesson for our students!
MLK Day of Service with AmeriCorps
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Port Angeles School District AmeriCorps will host a community art project on January 16th.
Join us at Port Angeles High School anytime between 10am and 2pm to make some art and celebrate our community in the spirit of serving together.
All art supplies and snacks will be provided. Hope to see you there!
PAHS' Sports Medicine Program is Shaping up Nicely!
Taping tables are used for treatment and athletic taping in sports and the hi-lo tables are treatment tables that offer maximum flexibility and ergonomic comfort for both the patient and examiner. The Sports Whirlpool Tub will help student-athletes by applying the positive thermal effects of hydrotherapy to sports-related injuries. Sports injuries are usually accompanied by inflammation and a limited range of motion. Whirlpool therapy tubs used in sports medicine can relieve both symptoms via hot/cold therapy baths.
Thank you to the maintenance team for installing this equipment and to Shaunna Olson, the Sports Medicine Teacher, for making this possible for our students to learn real-life skills in an ever-changing world!
