Crazy Doc's rant and raves...
- If you send a student to the focus room please do so with one of the tickets Casey has provided, that way she knows why they are there. If they do not have a ticket they will be sent back to class.
- Please remember to give yourself credit for the events you attend. Each teacher is expected to attend 3 after school events. Next year we will move to a model where each grade level and department is represented at each PTA meeting. Here is the check in for our events so far: https://docs.google.com/a/sps.org/spreadsheets/d/1xru7fuenf01e2mb01wCoQhbrDw_zVEI_wImMFI7wA1g/edit?usp=sharing
Teacher Spotlight
Thank you to Megan Pinney (video below is to help in the future) for her continued patience and work with her challenging students. Also a huge shout out to everyone who stepped up and helped out on Wednesday.
Do you have a idea for a person in the spotlight? Please let me know.
From Jessica
The first thing I want to recognize that the switch to Conscious Discipline is NOT easy. I'm trying to attempt the switch but fail at it every day, because it's different than how I was raised and trained as an educator. I attended a workshop this week by a Conscious Discipline trainer and she admitted to failing at times as well. She stated that every time she failed a student it was usually because she didn't take the time to calm herself first before she tried to calm the student. Always take time to breath when dealing with a discipline issue.
The presenter also stated that if we can catch students with a Level I intervention we can typically prevent them from escalating beyond intervention. Here is an example of intervening at a Level I (this is similar to what I shared last week).
Notice all attention seeking behaviors and redirect them. For example, if they are pouting, instead of ignoring it, tell the child "I notice your face looks like this (demonstrate their facial expression), you must be sad. You have a choice! You can walk to the carpet or skip to the carpet. What is your choice? (after they choose) You chose ____. (after they complete the choice) Way to go!" This acknowledges their initial emotion and gives them the information they need to move beyond it. Most students act out because they are feeling disconnected in some way. This helps them feel connected to you in that moment. Also, most students when experiencing an emotional response (Sad, mad) can't always make a decision for themselves, by giving them simple choice it helps them.
Conscious Discipline believes if we can change our language from passive (using words like please) or aggressive (harsh tone, or threatening/punishing) to assertive (direct command of what you want them to do) then we could prevent many students from escalating.
