The Weekly Howl
St. Francis Catholic School - Saturday, October 5th
Dear Parents & Friends of SFCS,
The students were visited by Deacon John DeWolfe this week in celebration of St. Francis and the celebration will continue tomorrow with our annual Parish Picnic, "Feasting with Francis". This is always a fun event and our school families have traditionally had a wonderful amount of participation. If you didn't get a t-shirt or tickets yet then you can still come and purchase tickets at the gate. It looks like temperatures have cooled off and it will be a great time for some awesome food, fun and fellowship!!! Hope you can make it.
In this edition of the Howl you will find information on many events that are coming up in the near future. Please check them out. Have a great remainder to your weekend and hope to see you tomorrow at the Parish Picnic!
Sincerely in Christ,
Brian Pope
Principal

Discovery Lab - 5th Grade
Our budding taxonomists were called to help scientists identify and classify newly discovered aliens from the planet Parmishan. Their skills were needed to examine the physical traits of the aliens and use a dichotomous key to identify their scientific names.
6th Grade Social Studies
6th graders participated in silent trading of goods to reenact trading life in ancient Mesopotamia. They did not have a universal language, written or spoken, so their trading of tokens had to be done silently. They did great!

Altar Server Training and Sign Up
We greatly appreciate the students who are deciding to serve in this capacity especially when they choose to give up an occasional recess or lunch with their friends. A wonder act of sacrifice and stewardship! Please encourage your child to serve. Many hands make light work and the more altar servers we have will allow the students to avoid missing too much of their favorite parts of the day. Also the church is always in need of more altar servers for Sunday mass. Please sign them up and encourage them to serve!

Lowcountry Community Dinner for Catholic Education
Dear Parents,
Our K – 5th grade students are about to embark on a Fall Reading Frenzy! The Frenzy will last four weeks, from Monday September 30 through Friday November 1. The class that reads the most during the period will get to come to school dressed up a character from their favorite book and enjoy the Kona Ice Snow Cone Truck on Friday November 15 during lunch!
Reading logs will be handed out and returned during Media Science each week. That way class reading time can be tallied and posted weekly in order to keep the students updated as our Frenzy continues! Results will be posted regularly in the hall in front of the school office. I have attached the reading log for week one.
Please remember that textbooks do not count. However, any independent reading in class, at home, or in the library does!!! For our little ones, they may read with their parents or siblings.
As always, please contact me with any questions that you may have. I have explained the contest to the students in class and they are ready for the Fall Reading Frenzy to begin!
Blessings,
Tori Safe

An Awesome Opportunity!!!
Collect Those Bottle Caps!!!
Last year the top school in the month long drive collected 14,000.00 bottle caps. This year the contest has begun and will run until March 2020. The POC is planning on constructing the largest octagonal bottle cap mural and will be applying the structure to be entered into the Guinness Book of World Records. The top school will be mentioned in the write up in the submission. We got this SFCS!!!
So I challenge our school to collect 100,000 bottle caps by March 2020. We can do this! It can be broken down many ways. If each class collects one garbage can full then we can reach our goal. If every student collects 3 bottle caps a day then we can reach our goal. So don't throw away those bottle caps. Water bottle caps, soda bottle caps, peanut butter, laundry detergent and all other plastic bottle caps count. So keep them and bring them to school. There is a bin in the lobby where you can drop them off or have your child bring them to their classroom. Soon each class will have a container to do so.
If our school reaches 100,000 by March 2020 then Mr. Pope and Ms. McGlynn will reward all the students with a movie afternoon in the gym with popcorn while the faculty can work in their classrooms. Also Mr. Pope will commit to refurbishing our current water fountains to refillable filtered water fountains.
There also will be a monthly contest. The class that collects the most plastic bottle caps each month will be rewarded with a pizza or an ice cream party of their choosing.
This is an great project for a well deserving cause for our community and environment. More information about the project and information about its importance will be communicated throughout this year. Check out the Palmetto Ocean Conservancy, Bottle Cap Mural Project Facebook Page by Clicking HERE or the link below. We got this SFCS!!!
