MHS STUDENT & FAMILY NEWSLETTER
Week of December 9 - November 13, 2024
RSU 57 & Massabesic High School
"Preparing students for success in an ever-changing world."
Hello Mustang Nation,
A special thank you to our students for their flexibility and understanding as we experienced a few challenges with this week, first on Thursday with a delay to the start of school and on Friday with some creative staffing coverage for our classes. Our students are champions of flexibility and they should be commended for demonstrating this skill when asked to do so. Thank you, also, to the MHS staff for quickly making adjustments when needed to best serve our students.
This coming week will feature two unique programs for our Grade 10 students. First on Wednesday, Dec. 11 Grade 10 students will be involved in the ASVAB Exploratory Program, and on Friday our Grade 10 students will hear from representatives from Sanford Regional Technical Center and the vocational programming offered at SRTC.

NJROTC Area Manager Inspection
On December 3, the NJROTC program underwent its Annual Military Inspection (AMI), a thorough review required by law to evaluate all aspects of the program, including recordkeeping, property management, cadet recognition, and conduct standards. Gregory Washington, the Area Manager overseeing 26 schools from Western New York to Southern Connecticut, commended the cadets for their preparation and dedication. The inspection included individual evaluations of cadets’ appearance, knowledge, and precision, along with a carefully practiced indoor parade, the “pass and review,” which cadets had been working on all year.
First- and second-year cadets brought enthusiasm and energy, earning praise from Mr. Washington, a retired Navy chief warrant officer and experienced NJROTC instructor. Standout cadets Daniel Harriman, a third-year student named “Cadet of the Quarter,” and Isabel Lowell, a second-year student and November’s “Cadet of the Month,” were recognized for their exceptional commitment to every activity offered by the unit.
Reflecting on the cadets’ performance, Captain Douglas Howell said, “We have seen so many of our cadets evolve and grow; moments in the classroom, on a field trip, and [in] their level of performance in public. We saw that yesterday in their inspection. It is not what you measure, it’s what you see. The cadets in our program make this work.”
The NJROTC program is led by Chief Joseph Lipp and Captain Douglas Howell, whose guidance continues to inspire and support cadets in achieving excellence.
JOY BLAST FOR MRS. TODD!
Grade 10 - ASVAB Career Exploration Program Testing - Wednesday, 12.11.24
On Wednesday, December 11th, during our early release day, all sophomores will participate in the ASVAB Career Exploration Program. This comprehensive program helps you learn about careers that match your skills and interests and explore the pathways to achieve them.
The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is different from other tests you may have taken. There’s no “passing” or “failing” grade because the test isn’t designed to measure achievement. Instead, it evaluates your current knowledge and skills to predict potential success in three areas: math, verbal, and science/technical.
You’ll receive your results a few weeks after the test. ASVAB career counselors will explain the report and guide you in exploring careers that align with your abilities and interests.
Deciding to attend college, technical or vocational school, join the military, or enter the workforce after high school is an important choice. Participating in the ASVAB helps you explore careers that fit your interests and skills, while also developing effective strategies to reach your goals. The ASVAB CEP presents a wide range of career options for all students, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or ability level.
