A Message from the Superintendent
Congratulations to all of our elementary school and middle school Spelling Bee champions and our district champion, Alan Castañeda from Lake Hills, and runner-up, Carmen Gama from Villegas. Alan and Carmen will move on and represent Alvord at the next level of competition at the Riverside County Spelling Bee on March 23, 2023, at the Moreno Valley Conference & Recreation Center, 14075 Frederick St. in Moreno Valley.
The Riverside County Spelling Bee Competition champion will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee to represent Riverside County. That event is during Scripps National Spelling Bee Week, from May 28 to June 2 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. Good luck Alan and Carmen! We're all rooting for you.
National School Counseling Week was celebrated this past week at all of our schools to recognize and honor our school counselors for their work promoting student success, fostering emotional health and shaping our students' life ambitions. The impact the COVID era has had on many students, particularly the most vulnerable students, has added to the challenge of school counseling. Ensuring students are not slipping through the cracks, intervening to help students overcome obstacles, and identifying and supporting students who may be carrying emotional weight is a huge responsibility, and our school counselors are equal to it. It takes time to learn about a student’s unique story, but it is time that our counselors make to build the level of trust that encourages communication and transparency. On behalf of the Board of Education, thank you school counselors for all you do for our students, our schools, and our district.
SCHOOL SAFETY WEEKLY UPDATE
Among the Measure J priorities related to safety is implementing a Rapid Emergency Response System (RERS) that instantly notifies emergency responders and building occupants of an emergency situation, which ultimately expedites a rapid response, and empowers response teams to make more informed decisions faster. Much of the work is related to infrastructure and has already begun. The results of our security/threat assessments, completed in the Fall, have informed our school safety plans, our emergency management plans, and our Measure J project planning efforts, including video camera integration, controlled access integration, and building-security enhancements. I will regularly provide additional details on this and all Measure J safety projects in this space.
IN CLOSING
On behalf of the Board of Education, enjoy a restful and peaceful Presidents' Week recess. School resumes on Tuesday, February 21. The actual Presidents' Day federal holiday is on Monday, February 20. Schools and all district offices will be closed in observance of it.
As always, thank you for choosing Alvord schools. We strive to be our very best, so that our students can be their very best.
In partnership,
Allan Mucerino
