December Cornerstone: Integrity
This week, I was reminded again of how important this counsel is. I first heard this definition as a first-year graduate student more than 20 years ago. Ever since, it has been something I have strived to live up to each day. But this week, in a crucial conversation with an employee, I was rightfully asked whether my actions were in fact doing things the right way. It only took a moment of honest reflection to recognize that the course of action I had been pursuing did not live up to my personal definition of integrity and I needed to change course.
I'm grateful for a staff member who was willing to confront my actions and make me reflect on what I was doing and why. That is something that we all need sometime, because, in spite of our best intentions, there will be times that we fall short of expectations. That's just part of our gig as humans. What matters is that we recognize those shortfalls and pitfalls and do our best to do better. To me, this is the way that we maintain our integrity when we have moments that fall short.
