October's Counseling Focus
This month, our RES Counselor, Mrs. Britt, will visit all classrooms to teach lessons about our character trait and mindset of the month.
Students will learn about responsibility and think about how mistakes are opportunities for learning!
October Kindness Calendar for Students!
In addition to our monthly character trait and mindset, our RES students, families and staff will continue to practice acts of kindness all year long. Click here to view and print the kindness calendar for October. Paper copies of the kindness calendar were ready to send home on Friday and all students should have them by Monday, September 30th.
Students: For every kindness task our students complete, they will check it off their calendars. Students may return their
- September calendar to their homeroom teacher, or to Mrs. Britt, on Tuesday, October 1st.
- October calendar to their homeroom teacher, or to Mrs. Britt, on Friday, November 1st.
Students with 20 or more completed tasks will join Mrs. Britt at lunch to paint kindness rocks for our RES Rock Gardens in the front of the school!
Mindful Tip of the Week
Waking Up
The first moments of waking are a wonderful time to practice mindfulness to greet the day:
Arrange your body in a comfortable position.
Stretch and let your attention scan your body quickly.
Pay attention to how each part of your body feels.
Follow several cycles of inhales and exhales for 1 minute.

Vision/Hearing Screenings
Starting October 7, 2024, Mrs. Hall will be performing vision and hearing screenings for all PK, 1st graders, and all new SMCPS students following SMCPS Health Regulations. Please reach out to Mrs. Hall, if you have any questions or concerns.
Free Drive-Thru Flu Vaccines
St. Mary's County Health Department will be offering free flu vaccines for children ages 6 months to 18 years of age living in St. Mary's County.
- October 8th (12pm - 4pm) at the SMC Health Hub

Fundraising Communication for Families
School-wide fundraising events take place for many different purposes. For the 2024-2025 School Year, you can expect the following fundraising events to take place:
Information regarding specifics to these events will be shared via ClassDojo and our RES Rocket Weekly Smore Flyer. If there are additions to this list, you will be notified. Each fundraising communication will specify the purpose of the fundraiser to keep you informed of the purpose of the fundraiser.
Ridge Elementary School appreciates any support you can provide for our fundraising efforts for our school community and community organizations, such as Relay for Life.

Healthy Snacks!
A short snack break or working snack time will be given in the classroom sometime during the instructional day. A healthy snack will help fuel our students’ learning. Students are also
encouraged to bring water, which is the only drink allowed in the classroom.
If you choose to send a snack with your child, please be aware that candy is not allowed for snack.

Partner for Success Workshop: A New View of ADHD for Parents
Partner for Success is sponsoring a workshop focused upon ADHD for parents/guardians, discussing what works, what doesn't, and why. Families are invited to participate in this workshop on Thursday, October 10, 2024, from 6:00pm-8:00pm at the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and technology Center.
Presenter, Frank Kros, will will discuss how the ADHD brain works differently from non-ADHD brains and provide multiple practical strategies for enhancing ADHD strengths and effectively meeting ADHD-inspired needs for learning and behavior.
Parents will learn how to become "the surrogate frontal lobes" for their children and how to change their view of ADHD from a purely behavioral disorder to a unique brain construct that can be accommodated with highly successful outcomes.
This workshop is free but registration is require.

Conscious Discipline Workshop: Building from the Beginning
Parents of young children and local Childcare Providers are invited to participate in a Conscious Discipline workshop Tuesday, October 15, 2024, from 5:30-7:00 p.m.
The Building from the Beginning workshop will be held at the Dr. James A. Forrest Career & Technology Center, and will focus on:
- Understanding the brain states behind the behavior
- Master calming and coping strategies
- Empower children to be problem solvers
Mission BBQ has graciously offered to provide dinner to the first 100 people who register. Childcare is not available.

Local childcare providers may register here and SMCPS will pursue MSDE Core of Knowledge Hours on their behalf.
Volunteer Registration
Volunteers must apply annually for approval.
- Applications are accepted only until May 1st.
- There is no application fee.
- Vetting of applications can take several weeks.
- Field trip chaperones and classroom volunteers must have successfully completed the volunteer application process before they can be considered.
