Message from Principal Wadkins
I hope everyone had a wonderful Fall Break! I hope that you found parent teacher conferences helpful in supporting your students. Please feel free to let us know how the format worked for your family with sessions that were virtual and some that were in person.
The next three weeks will be packed with events. This week we look forward to having parents back in the building this for our eighth grade information night - Bridging the Gap - on Thursday from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. We are also hosting our first Winter Bazaar on Saturday in the cafeteria from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Come see wonderful crafts and artwork from our students for sale as well as yummy treats. Our winter fundraiser, CHS Gives Back, is in full swing. This annual fundraiser provides for families in our community. You may donate money through the School Pay link or purchase non-perishable food and household items. We have links and wish lists below in this newsletter. Students can bring the items to school and put them in the collection containers in the main hall.
Our community has been very involved with the visioning for the modernization of Cleveland HS working towards a bond package for the May 2025 ballot. The PPS Facilities Improvement Oversight Committee has been discussing the bond package since October. They will be meeting tonight at the district office from 6-7:30 PM. I have linked the agenda here: https://meetings.boardbook.org/Public/Agenda/915?meeting=665611. In particular, the staff memo from Dan Jung, PPS Chief Operating Officer, outlines a scope of work that includes reductions in the plans for all three high schools still in need of modernization: Jefferson HS, Ida B. Wells HS and Cleveland HS. In particular, $340 million dollars is being proposed for Cleveland HS. The new proposed amount represents a reduction of $108 million from the original budget proposed in the Comprehensive Plan for Cleveland HS that was approved by the board in May 2024. The planning stages for Cleveland HS which have included contracts for the design team of Mahlum Architects and Studio Petretti and the construction company Skanska have been funded at $20 million from the 2020 bond. This proposed reduction will have a major impact on our project. The committee meeting is open to the public, and we have had Cleveland community members at each of the committee meetings. I will be there tonight and will keep you informed.
