CVU Celebrations
March 29, 2024
Dear CVU Community: Could it be that Senior Exit Experiences are already upon us? Wondering what an Exit Experience actually is? Simply, they ask our graduates to speak to who they’ve been, who they hope to be, and where they’re headed. Below are some of the activities and questions that help our students prepare for their presentations to the community. I’d be interested in your feedback and ideas!

Student Council Corner
Happy Friday, CVU! This is Ariel. This week, Student Council learned about the school budget before splitting into new work groups, planning events upcoming in Quarter 4. Rene Sanchez gave a presentation about how the school budget works, and how getting out there and voting is crucial to maintaining the amazing school system we have today. The revote on the budget will be on April 16th. If you are 18, make sure to be there! If you’re not yet 18, encourage your family and friends to cast their vote. Every vote counts towards maintaining crucial programs and positions within our district! After the presentation, Student Council members worked on several upcoming events, including Cultural Awareness Week (date TBA), Senior Sunrise, Teacher Appreciation Week, and Student Council/Class President elections. More info on all of these awesome events is coming soon! Have a great long (for some) weekend, Hawks!!

From Ry Hoffman: Students - Robyn Palmer, the Education and Civic Engagement Coordinator for the Secretary of State's Office, has contacted us in hopes of getting some assistance with the Youth Civic Health Survey. Please read the following and complete the survey if you choose. The description and survey link (this is a 10-minute survey) is as follows: To gain a deeper understanding of civic attitudes among our state’s youth population, we are partnering with the YMCA to utilize their Youth Civic Health Survey to supply the youth perspective for our CHI. This will help us understand how we can best support youth civic engagement across Vermont.
From Katie Mack: On Wednesday, March 27, the Core hosted nine local individuals and organizations as part of their Social Justice Speaker Day. Designed to supplement their study of Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, ninth graders spent their morning listening to speakers who work daily to dismantle systemic oppression and racism in Vermont.
Thank you to the following individuals and organizations for giving their valuable time to deepen our students' understanding: CVU RAC, Representative Saudia LaMont, Color the Valley, Legal Services Vermont, Vermont Human Rights Commission, Vermont Students Against Racism Network, Williston Community Justice Center, Education Justice Coalition, and Peace and Justice Center.
Kayden (and family) and Gavin led us in Greek dancing (and served Greek food) during C3 this week!
NEWS FROM THE VOLUNTEER OUTREACH CLUB
The CVU Volunteers have been busy this month! Students from VOC helped out at the Shelburne Charlotte Rotary Club's annual "Pie Breakfast" on March 16th. They reported that the pies were delicious and the post-breakfast dancing was even more fun!
On Thursday, March 21, students from VOC participated in the Spectrum Sleep Out. Twenty-two students braved the cold and raised over $3,000 for Spectrum. If you would like to donate to our team, please use this link! Spectrum is about $20,000 from their goal! The student organizers of this event, Veronica Miskavage and Jacklyn Whittier, did a fantastic job of planning a fun and meaningful evening for us all!
From Andrew Miskavage/Cameron Brownell: On Thursday, March 21, the CVU Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, and Jazz Band presented an entertaining concert to family, friends, and faculty! The concert featured pop hits like Portugal the Man's "Feel it Still" and Backstreet Boys' "I Want it That Way" and songs from movies like "Dig a Little Deeper" from Princess and the Frog and "Hoist the Colours" from Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.
From Alison Duback: Students and mentors from CY Mentoring took a trip to BETA Technologies on Wednesday and got a special tour of the Research and Development facility at Burlington International Airport. Students were able to "fly" the flight simulator and learned all about the technology that allows BETA's electric aircraft to exist and how it all came to be. The tour ended with a look at a charging pad and a stop in one of the artist-designed relaxing meeting spaces that looked and sounded like a fairytale forest.
From Emily McLean: CVU Photo Club had another photography contest. The themes were Animals/Pets and Out of the Ordinary. Congratulations to our winners and thank you to all of the participants. Here are the winning entries. Our next themes are Doors, Weather, and Love for Lake Champlain. Entries are due by Wednesday, May 1.
From Chris Hood: This community of learners from the W3 class worked together to find the joy in simplifying expressions...Who doesn't love a good Pythagorean Identity?!
From Leanne Morton: CVU's Latin students traveled to UVM for the 46th Annual Latin Day on Tuesday and brought home the Silver Bowl (argentea patera). Some students competed on tests and Live Quiz bowls while others performed recitations and skits. We had a number of beautiful art projects including amphora, a replica of the Pantheon, and an incredible Roman stola. There were students learning about Roman warfare techniques, playing ancient games, and touring the Fleming Museum, Special Collections and searching/reading Latin inscriptions around the UVM campus. What a day!
Here are the results:
- Myrrh Pitkin (Latin II) earned $100 for her artwork that graced the program of the day.
- Frankie Fidler (Latin V) placed 1st in his recitation of Cicero's Catalinian Oration
- Karmen Wilbur (Latin III) tied for 2nd in her recitation of Dido's speech in Vergil's Aeneid
- Karmen also won $50 for her beautiful tunica, stola and palla that she hand crafted.
- Lexi Hall (Latin IV) won $50 for the Classical Association of New England's writing contest.
- Charlotte Tyler (Latin IV) won 2nd place for her amphora and coin project.
- Myrrh Pitkin placed 1st in her art piece showcasing the day's theme of Political Successions.

The Senior Team consisted of Callyx O'Donnell (III), Dylan Elder (III), Lexi Hall (IV), Brady Lasher (IV), Caroline Paluska (IV) and Charlotte Tyler (IV). Our Junior Team consisted of Canute Hoehn (I), Ben Gordon (I), Jacob Hansen (II), Aiden Wilson (II), Max Ford (II) and Myrrh Pitkin (II).

From Ry Hoffman: Juniors and Seniors - A student from Rice Memorial High School reached out to CVU recently, as they are conducting a High School Stress Survey for their AP Research course. This study is exploring the differences between stress levels in public and private school upperclassmen. This will all be done anonymously and privately. If you are a current Junior or Senior, and wish to participate in this anonymous study, please click this link.
Faculty/Staff Celebrations
From Lora Crabtree: I recently had the honor of presenting CVSD’s nationally recognized Paraeducator Mentor Program in Las Vegas. School districts nationwide attended our workshop called Our Story: Building an ESP Mentoring Program and Creating Future ESP Leaders. I want to give a shout-out to this year's para mentor leaders who make this program the success it is: Heidi Beaudry, Sam DiPietro, Pam Jay, Melissa Kiphaut, Milli McCoy, Lexia Muse, Debbie Schlosser and Michelle Snow. These ESP leaders possess unwavering support for their colleagues.
Para Mentor programs are gaining traction across the country and we share our journey and resources with all who are committed to starting a program. In November, we held a Statewide 2-day clinic, training districts across Vermont. As a result of this workshop,10 districts in Vermont have emerging ESP mentor programs. This could not be possible without the dedicated ESP leaders who take on the mentor role. I want to give a special shout-out to Heidi Beaudry, who did a video testimonial for our presentation describing her experience as a mentee, and her evolution into a leadership role as a new mentor. People loved your story and said you inspired them!

From Brad Miller: The faculty and staff of CVU's alternative programs participated in a Harkness discussion today to begin the process of implementing a new vision statement for alternative education at our school. It was such a joy to hear these folks bring their considerable skills to bear at the table.
Thank you to Hinesburg Fire for keeping us safe and helping us to get school back in session this week!

CVSD hosted the annual Legislative Breakfast at CVU on Monday. We thank our representatives for their candor, active listening, and thoughtfulness.

BeSMART
Safety is always an adult responsibility. Kids will be kids, so it’s always an adult’s responsibility to keep children safe. Always assume that curious or impulsive kids may find and touch an unsecured gun, even if they’ve been told not to. If a child handles a gun, a bad decision can quickly become a fatal one. Be SMART adults protect kids by making sure all guns are stored securely, which means they are inaccessible to kids, and by making sure children are never in the presence of unsecured guns. Learn more on this flyer.
Do you need to secure your firearm? Free cable gun locks are available in our school office, the school district's office, the police station, and public libraries. Stop by and pick one up!
