Nixon Elementary Weekly Update
May 27, 2024
Monday Updates
No School Monday (May 27):
Remember that there is NO SCHOOL on Monday, May 27 in observance of Memorial Day. We hope you enjoy the extended weekend and we'll see everyone back at school on Tuesday.
Winding Down:
We are winding down to the end of the school year with only 8 more school days left. As we work our way to summer break, I want to be sure everyone remembers to start encouraging their students to take items home and check the Lost and Found for any remaining coats, sweatshirts, water bottles, etc. that may have been left behind. I will donate any items left in the Lost and Found over the summer, so be sure you have learners double check it before the year is up.
Annual Verification:
Just a reminder that July 1st open Annual Verification for our school district. This is a time to update your address, phone numbers, emergency contacts, pay school book fees, and make sure you are registered for the correct school in case you have moved. Tracy and I will be working this summer in the front office if you need any support with completing this process. Please keep an eye out for emails and information about Annual Verification and be sure to ask if you have any questions!
Field Trip Season is Here!
As the temperature starts to increase, so does our number of school related field trips! In the upcoming weeks you'll receive more information from your child's homeroom teacher(s) about upcoming trips. Please be sure you have completed your Parent Permissions in Infinite Campus so your child can join us for the fun we have planned. If you aren't sure you've completed your permissions, please reach out to Ms. Tracy in the office to find out (319) 558-2188.
Important Dates:
We have several important days coming up, so be sure to mark these on your calendar:
- May 27: Memorial Day (No School)
- May 28: Virtual Author Visit w/ Dan Gutman
- June 3: Buddy Classroom End of the Year Celebration
- June 5: Hiawatha Fire Department Visit (Keep Kids Kool) & Scholar Celebration (5th Grade Graduation online)

Way to Go Scholars!
Welcome Back Bobcats!
Former Nixon Bobcats returned to the Nixon Halls last week for a final goodbye before they graduate from Kennedy High School. Members from the class of 2024 made a guest appearance last Monday to walk through our building, tell us about themselves, and recall some of their favorite Nixon memories. It was great to see their familiar faces as they get ready to embark on their next great adventures. Congratulations to all our former Nixon Bobcats on their successful graduation from high school this past week!
Summer Reading Programs We Hope You'll Check Out!
Hiawatha Library Summer Reading Program
Ms. Alicia from the Hiawatha Public Library stopped by to tell us all about her summer reading program last Tuesday. Please take some time to check out the link below and sign up for the summer reading program! https://www.hiawathapubliclibrary.org/14135
Cedar Rapids Kernels Summer Reading Program
Logan and Mr. Shucks from the Cedar Rapids Kernels also came out to tell us all about their summer reading program this past week. Be sure to look for flyers coming home with the CR Kernels logo and baseball diamond for summer reading. There are some great prizes and even a chance to walk onto the field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in August.

End of May & June Field Trips
Virtual Author Visit on May 28th with Dan Gutman!
On Tuesday May 28th, Nixon learners will get to experience a virtual Author Visit with Dan Gutman, author of the Weird School series. We are excited to not only engage learners in a One-Book Challenge as a school (everyone in the building reads the same Dan Gutman book over the course of 2 weeks here at school), but we'll also be sending 2 copies of Dan Gutman's books home with learners to enjoy over the summer AND have a fun virtual Author Visit to meet Dan and ask him some questions. Keep an eye out for future communication about this fun event, as well as some information on how you can order more of his books if you child loves the series. You can read more about the author from the flyer below.
Last Day of School Updated!
On Friday, all families received communication from the Cedar Rapids Community School District with notification about a change to the end of the school year. Our last day of school will now be Thursday, June 6. This day will be an early dismissal at 2:20 pm.
