A Note from your School Psychologist…
Have you been having class meetings?
The class meeting is a time when teachers and students can make decisions, discuss & solve problems, and set expectations for behavior and relationships. The class meeting is a great time to discuss emotions and provide students with opportunities to talk about issues that affect the class. Class meetings can be brief and take place any time during the day! Daily meetings can provide routine structure, allow for celebration of accomplishments, promote reflection and goal setting as a group, and facilitate forgiveness and moving on after difficult events or problems. If your meeting lands at the end of the day it can be used to create a forum for discussing how students managed their tasks, emotions, and relationships during the school day. Meetings provide opportunities for students to become leaders and facilitators, although the teacher may be in this role initially.
Suggestions to help make class discussion a positive experience:
· Show each other respect by listening attentively and encouraging positive classroom behavior.
· Allow sufficient time for initial responses from students and then probe for further information if necessary.
· Encourage participation from all students.
· Encourage non-volunteers.
· Prohibit subtle put-down tactics in response to student sharing.
