Superintendent's Update - 10.4.2024
Dear CPS Community,
I hope you all had a wonderful week, and to those who celebrate Rosh Hashanah, I wish you a happy new year!
This past week, Parker Middle School held its first community service project of the school year. Called Change for Change, the initiative saw Parker students and staff collecting spare change in buckets in the lobby. While there was some friendly competition involved, the ultimate goal was to raise money for the Jimmy Fund to support kids with cancer. Projects like this go a long way to teaching our students the importance of generosity, as well as instilling in them that, no matter the size of the contribution, they can make a positive impact on the lives of others.
Tomorrow is World Teacher’s Day, a day to honor the incredibly passionate teachers who inspire and shape our future. And just because the holiday falls on a Saturday this year doesn’t mean we’re not celebrating all their hard work and dedication in the classroom! Teachers are the backbone of education, equipping students with the skills, knowledge and values needed for success. We couldn’t be more thankful for the gifted team of teachers we have at Chelmsford Public Schools who make a profound impact on our students every single day.
In addition to teachers, we’re also celebrating our athletic coaches this weekend, as Sunday happens to be National Coaches Day. Chelmsford student-athletes are unbelievably lucky to have so many dedicated mentors, both inside and outside the classroom. Our coaches are not only building better athletes, but also better people, especially when it comes to teaching our youth the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship. Some of our coaches are classroom teachers, as well, making this weekend doubly special for them! So, if you happen to see one of our extraordinary educators or coaches over the weekend, make sure to say thank you!
I also want to bring your attention to a couple community events happening in the coming days. On Saturday, Oct. 5, Chelmsford residents are invited to take a tour of two of Chelmsford’s fire stations, Station 3 and Station 5. They are both over 50 years old and are in need of upgrades and improvements. Proposals for construction and renovation of these facilities will appear on the Fall Town Meeting and Nov. 5 Election ballots. There will also be an informational meeting on Thursday, Oct. 10, at Station 3 on Old Westford Road. Please see the flyers included in this newsletter for more information, or visit https://www.chelmsfordma.gov/1057/Fire-Station-Study-Committee.
Have a fantastic weekend!
Yours truly,
Jay Lang, Ed.D.

In The News
Parker Perk Cafe opens for the season
Parker Perk Café has officially opened for the season, serving up hot and iced coffee, tea, cappuccino, hot chocolate and a variety of baked goods to the Parker Middle School community. The makeshift café, set up in a corner of the Parker Middle School cafeteria, is open to faculty and staff on most Friday mornings from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. and is operated by students in Parker’s Life Skills class. While the coffee and atmosphere are great, the purpose of Parker Perk Café is to teach real-world skills such as communication, literacy, measurements and math, as well as fine motor skills. The Life Skills students serve as hosts, cashiers and waitstaff, and also man a delivery cart that goes around to classrooms for those unable to dine-in.
