Dear Rock View Families,
As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s a wonderful time to reflect on the meaning of gratitude and togetherness. This season reminds us of the importance of community and the joy of supporting one another. I am truly thankful to be in Maryland and part of the Rock View family, where kindness and dedication shine every day. Wishing you and your loved ones a happy, healthy, and restful Thanksgiving!
Parent-Teacher Conferences at Rock View are scheduled for November 25th and 26th. These days will be half-days for students, giving teachers the opportunity to meet with families and discuss student progress in detail. Conferences provide a valuable moment to celebrate accomplishments, address areas for improvement, and set meaningful goals for the months ahead. We’re excited to collaborate with you and look forward to these insightful conversations that support our roadrunners’ growth and success!
Warm Regards,
Ms. Batista
Let's Talk Math!
Rock View is focusing on elevating discourse among students during instruction. One way that Eureka Math supports this process is through the use of Instructional Routines. Students in Grade 1 used the Instructional Routine of “Critique a Flawed Response” during the Module 2 Lesson 11 as they reviewed a solution to a word problem and discovered the mistake. Students discussed in pairs what they saw and how the error could be fixed. First grade students have been using a “Make a Ten” strategy to solve word problems. Can you find the error on the problem below? Think about your answers to the questions in the thought bubble. Did you use the word bank to help you explain your response?
To see more examples of discourse opportunities at Rock View, check out the “Math Adds to Our View” bulletin board in the First Grade hallway when you come in for conferences next week.

Let's Read!
Looking for a fun way to help your child practice their reading skills? One important skill we focus on with students is teaching them to "go back to the text" when answering questions. Young readers can be hesitant to do this, but you can make practicing it easier and more enjoyable by cooking or baking together! Find a simple recipe, either in a cookbook or online, and get started in the kitchen. Whether you're reading the recipe aloud to your child or they're reading it themselves, encourage them with phrases like, "Let's double-check that amount" or "What does the next step say? Let's go back and take a look." Cooking and baking naturally require readers to refer back to the instructions repeatedly, helping reinforce this valuable skill. Plus, reading recipes builds vocabulary, improves comprehension, and even sharpens math skills. It's a fun, hands-on way to sneak in some reading practice while making something delicious!

Testing Update (CogAT)
Upcoming CogAT Testing (2nd and 3rd Grade Students ONLY)
As part of the Universal Screening of second and third graders for Gifted and Talented (GT) Identification and to help inform your child’s teacher about how your student learns, your child will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). The CogAT has three batteries: verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal. Each battery has 3 subtests. Rock View ES will administer the test over the course of three days for each grade level. Grade 3 students will take the test December 4th, 5th, and 6th. Grade 2 will take the test December 11th, 12th, and 13th. Testing will take place during the school day. Students will complete one battery with three subtests on each testing day. The tests are untimed for Grade 2 students, but each subtest typically lasts approximately 10-15 minutes. The test is timed for Grade 3 students and each subtest lasts 10 minutes. If a student is absent on the day of testing, make-up testing is available during the testing window of December 2-20, 2024. Additional information was sent home on Friday, November 8th.
The CogAT is an abilities test, so children do not need to study or prepare for the test. Instead, they will be able to become familiar with the test format and items through teacher-directed practice activities before testing. Additionally, practice questions will be administered during the testing session to familiarize students with the online testing environment. It can be helpful for students to be well-rested and have a good breakfast on the day of testing.

Hello RVES Families! (Traducción al español a continuación)
The official Read-A-Thon ends in two days (Friday) and we are currently at $6,504 raised (with a $15,000 goal)!
There are just a couple of days for your students to log their minutes! Minutes can be logged either using the physical reading log that was included in the Read-A-Thon packet or, if you are using an online donation page, you can track your minutes using the "manage" link in the email you received from 99Pledges.
For any students that collected cash or check pledges ($/minute rather than a flat donation), please have the student turn in the manila envelope that came with their Read-A-Thon packet no later than Monday, 12/2.
It's not too late to start logging and collecting donations! If you would like to have an online donation page created, please email fundraising@rvespta.org.
Pro-tip - Soliciting donations via social media is a great way to get donations from friends and family that you may not expect. I like to use the "Story" function and post reading related pictures with messages asking for donations and including the link to donate. Through this method, friends that I haven't seen in multiple decades have donated to support my kids. If this is something you're comfortable with, I highly recommend it!
Thank you all for your participation and support!
