Welcome back to all TRS students and families! It was great seeing so many parents at back to school night on September 13th. The 18-19 school year has been off to a fantastic start and we are looking forward to a wonderful year of working together! Here, you may find grade level or department wide updates, upcoming important dates and any school wide enrichment information. If you have any questions about what you see here or wish to see here, please contact your child's homeroom teacher or the main office. We truly value both parent and student feedback.

Today, we are expressing a concern that many children and adults in our society have severe and life-threatening food allergies. Some of these allergy sufferers may be in our school district. The most common allergens that cause anaphylaxis are peanuts, tree nuts, milk, egg, fish, shellfish, soy and wheat. Eating these foods, even in trace amounts, may cause severe reaction (anaphylaxis) that can lead to a severe reaction or even death. Even touching contaminated surfaces may cause a reaction. School staff have been trained to recognize such reactions and to administer medication in an emergency.

However, most importantly, we are asking that, effective immediately, you only send in non-edible treats with your child for your child’s birthday. This may include birthday stickers, pencils, or any small inexpensive trinket. Many store bought or homemade cupcakes include traces of nuts. We cannot serve these treats any longer. Further, cupcake and cupcake frosting creates a hard to clean mess in each classroom becoming a meeting spot for bugs.

However, please do not feel pressured to buy anything. Each child’s birthday is celebrated in the morning during morning announcements and each child is given a birthday pencil from the principal. During the last few minutes of each birthday, the birthday child will be celebrated by their classmates and teacher.

I hope that you can support our new non-edible treats request. We appreciate your assistance in ensuring the health and safety of each student.

This year, TRS will be offering after school enrichment classes to all interested students. These classes will be taught by our own certified special area and content area teachers. In addition, this year we will introduce a Math program offered by the Stevens Institute of Technology. Qualified Math instructors from the Institute will work with students in grade 3 and 4 during these enrichment classes. These programs are free for students at Roosevelt School and made possible through the Weehawken Board of Education but seats are limited and students who sign up must be fully committed. Students have already registered and are looking forward to beginning Math Circles, Strings Enrichment, Art Enrichment, and Science/Steam club beginning October 1, 2018.

Once again, the Theodore Roosevelt School PTA will be holding their After School Enrichment Classes here at TRS. On Mondays, they offer M. Avery (a sewing class), Cartooning for Young Rembrandts, and Let's Make Magic. On Tuesdays, they offer Improve through Improv and Mad Science. Wednesday's offerings are Airplane Builders, Dance Party and Theater Boot Camp. Registration was required and these classes will begin October 1, 2018.
