Counselors' Corner
Our focus for CCMR in March was careers, and we packed in some great events to provide information and opportunities. Krishelle Hanson of Universal Technical Institute came and spoke about the opportunities they offer to prepare graduates with training, certifications, and job placement in multiple trade fields. On March 14, Travis MItchell came and gave a motivating speech about his career path which involved many challenges along his journey through military, college graduation, police enforcement, under cover investigations, and then a career shift to being a pilot. His story was testament to how careers can change, plans often change, and that it is never too late to challenge yourself, no matter what your current situation. Then we closed out the Month with representatives from Work Force Solutions, who gave a wonderful presentation about the services they provide for HS graduates to graduate and be certified in some of the most valuable trades right here in our area. They provide local, grant supported tuition, job training , and job placement in our area. It was great to hear about all the options available to our students after graduation.

Charter School Funding - Did you know?
Great news from the Capitol!
House Bill 2, which covers school finance, has now been filed by Chairman Brad Buckley — and it includes additional funding for public charter school facilities.
Here's the quick math: Today, total facilities funding for all Texas public charter schools is capped at $60 million. HB 2 would remove the cap and calculate facilities funding on a per-student basis, resulting in an estimated total of $179 million next school year.
This is a huge step toward fairness. Unequal facilities funding is the main reason why public charter schools receive $1,600 less per student overall than other public schools.
Our top priority is to protect this proposal. There will likely be attempts to remove facilities funding from the bill. We have to make our voices heard.
So, what’s next? The House Public Education Committee needs to discuss HB 2 and vote to send it to the full Texas House. If your lawmaker is on the committee, we’ll reach out to you once a hearing is scheduled.
Get Caught Up: Unequal facilities funding is the top issue for public charter schools during the legislative session. This video explains what you need to know in just 30 seconds. Please take a moment to check it out.
Be on the lookout for a call to action. The legislative session is heating up!
