Choice of School
Choice of School is just around the corner. Many of our students will be making milestone transitions between elementary to middle school, middle school to high school and then high school to adulthood. We want to let you know that those moments can feel overwhelming for your child as well as the parent. Your dyslexia therapist is here to help you! Did you know we have dyslexia therapists on every Garland ISD campus? If your student needs to continue their therapy we have procedures in place that allow for all their information to follow them to the next campus.
Key points to consider during the transition
Student preparation:
- Discuss the changes: Openly talk to your child about the new school environment, teachers and potential challenges they might face
- Practice coping strategies: rehearse techniques to manage anxiety, like deep breathing or positive self talk
- Organization skills: Help your child develop strong organizational systems to manage their workload and assignments.
How can your child secure accommodations on standardized testing (SAT, ACT, and AP tests)?
- Parents should contact the student’s guidance counselor (or the person at the student’s school that coordinates testing) at least several months before the student plans to take a standardized test.
- This person will need a copy of any school or outside testing that the student has had completed.
- The counselor or coordinator will complete the appropriate paperwork, and the parents will have to sign an accommodation request form to be sent to the ACT or SAT College Board office.
- Admissions testing policies and procedures vary and are updated from time to time, so the student and his or her parents are encouraged to go to the test’s website and review the documentation policy statement for each test the student plans to take.
