From Your Pastors
Dear Zion family –
To all the women, happy Mother’s Day! Whether you are raising kids, have raised kids, are still waiting to raise kids, or are a mother-figure to a niece, nephew, grandchild or friend, you are a blessing to us all. Thank you for wisdom, gentleness, patience, and love. You’re the best! Fellas, a friendly reminder – if you haven’t gotten anything for that special mom in your life, now’s the time! Make sure you honor and celebrate her well.
At Zion this weekend, as we celebrate moms, join us between services for “Muffins with Mom” and a photo booth where you can take a picture with your family. In worship, we’ll continue our series called “Running on Empty.” We’ve all experienced moments when it feels like we have nothing left to give, but we also know we can’t just give up. In this series, we’re discovering how, when we feel empty, God can fill us with His grace and peace. This weekend, we’ll look at a story from the early church where Jesus’ twelve disciples were running on empty as they tried to run the church. No matter how much they tried to do, the demands on them continued to increase, like when some widows complained that the disciples were ignoring their needs in Acts 6:1-7:
In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.” This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. So the word of God spread.
In the ancient world, widows had no way to support themselves. So, they looked to the church. But some widows felt overlooked and underserved and asked the twelve disciples for help. Wisely, the disciples, rather than taking on a massive project themselves that involved feeding hungry widows, asked for help from others. Do you ask for help when you need it, or do you struggle? If you struggle, why? Learn why we all need help and how to ask for it this weekend in worship. We worship at 8 am in our beautiful historic sanctuary, at 10:45 am in our wonderful worship center, or online at zionwalburg.org.
Your pastors love you!
