Principal Update
Greetings FitzGerald Families!
Happy October! It's hard to believe how quickly the first month of school went by. Time sure does fly when you are having fun! Here are some weekly updates:
1. October Core Value and Social Emotional Learning topics:
During morning announcements each day, we say our FitzGerald Mission Statement together (see banner in picture above) and review the FitzGerald core value of the month. Students are recognized through paw print "shout outs" over the intercom when seen displaying the core value of the month, or any other core values of FitzGerald School. Paw prints are hung in the lobby area for the month and go home at the start of the following month. Students can also receive paw print stickers at any point during the day as well to recognize a student in the moment when showing examples of the school's core values.
The monthly Leader in Me Habit (from the resource we use district-wide to support conversations around Social Emotional Learning topics) and the CASEL competency focus (the national outline for Social Emotional Learning standards) are discussed during classroom Social Emotional Learning lessons, as well as during weekly classroom Community Circles.
Here are October's SEL topics:
October's Core Value- Respect- Being polite and courteous to others.
October Leader in Me Habit- Seek first to understand, then be understood.
October CASEL Competency Focus- Social Awareness- Hearing/understanding the perspective of others and empathizing with others
More information will be coming from Ms. Bernard in next week's Fitzy's Flyer that will share more information about October's Social Emotional Learning conversations with students.
2. Walking Wednesdays in October- The first Walking Wednesday of the school year was a great success! Thank you to the PTO organizers, the many volunteers, and all of the students/families that started their day on Wednesday with a nice walk to school! 88% of students present on Wednesday participated in the event, with 4 classes earning the Golden Shoe award for 100% participation! The classes with 100% participation were: Mrs. Scruggs, Mrs. Gonzalez, Mrs. Clifford, and Mrs. Foley!
We can't wait for next Wednesday's event already! Please remember to send your child with a signed Walking Wednesday ticket next Wednesday, October 9th!
Thank you for your continued partnership! Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Santillo, Principal- jennifersantillo@walthampublicschools.org
Mrs. Lamoly, Assistant Principal- julielamoly@walthampublicschools.org
Specialist Spotlight: Music Education with Mr. Irwin!
Hello FitzGerald Family!
It has been great seeing everyone again for the start of the school year and it has been wonderful to meet and teach the Kindergarten class! The beginning of the school year in music finds us reviewing expectations and routines as well as the following content related topics:
Grade K - At the beginning of kindergarten, we spend time becoming aware of the different sounds our voice can make (Ex. whisper voice, calling voice, speaking voice, squeaky voice, singing voice.) We also spend time learning how our bodies move by moving to music, keeping steady beats in our hands and feet, and doing various other rhymes and action songs that involve movement.
Grade 1 - In first grade, we review the many sounds we can make with our voices as we are singing call and response songs, echo songs, and simple songs. We also review how to keep a beat and move musically as we move to music and sing action songs.
Grade 2 - In second grade, we review the concepts of a singing voice and matching pitch while we learn how to sing together and in groups. We will learn the difference between a steady beat and a rhythm while we sing songs, speak rhymes, and play games.
Grade 3 - At the beginning of third grade we review skills from previous years (singing voice, matching pitch, keeping a beat, good singing posture, etc.) The students have also been very excited to begin learning the recorder. They have been learning how to play with proper posture, blowing with a gentle breath, and completely covering the holes with their fingers. The first song they have been working on is Hot Cross Buns.
Grade 4 - Like the other grades, fourth grade will review previous skills learned (singing voice, matching pitch, keeping a beat, singing posture, music vocabulary etc.) We are also learning how to sing songs in a round where the same song is sung but at different times by different groups.
Grade 5 - In fifth grade, in addition to each class's music class, the whole grade meets together once a week for 30 minutes for chorus. They are learning ensemble building skills and are getting used to being in an ensemble with many musicians. And believe it or not, we have already begun to learn songs for the Winter Concert in December! December might be a long way out, but for a musician, the preparations already need to begin!
