Lori Peek is director of the Natural Hazards Center and professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Colorado Boulder. She is also principal investigator of the NHERI-CONVERGE facility and the leader of the Social Science Extreme Events Research (SSEER) network and Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Extreme Events Research (ISEEER) platform. Peek has conducted field investigations in the aftermath of several major disasters and is an expert in vulnerable populations in disaster, interdisciplinary methods, and convergence research. She is author of Behind the Backlash: Muslim Americans after 9/11, co-author of Children of Katrina, co-author of The Continuing Storm: Learning from Katrina, and co-editor of Displaced: Life in the Katrina Diaspora and the Handbook of Environmental Sociology. Peek helped develop national natural hazards school safety guidance, which culminated in the publication of FEMA P-1000 Safer, Stronger, Smarter: A Guide to Improving School Natural Hazard Safety.

David G. Churchill is a professor in the department of Chemistry at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), in Daejeon, Korea. He is the head of the Inorganic Chemistry division and the editor in Chief of Main Group Chemistry (IOS) (since early 2021). His chemistry focuses on aspects of molecular neurodegenerative disease research. As PI of his lab, his research team at the Molecular Logic Gate Laboratory synthesizes a wide range of fluorophores including BODIPY, coumarin, and corrole systems for biological collaborated studies. Churchill has presented worldwide, received distinguished awards, and collaborated internationally. Churchill was in Israel in 2017-2018 for a year-long sabbatical with Professor Zeev Gross, a fellow Professor of Chemistry and Dean of the Technion’s division for external and continuing studies. Churchill credits professors Dr. “Ged” Parkin at Columbia University, Dr. Ken Raymond at the University of California - Berkeley, and his father, Melvyn R. Churchill, as being instrumental in his drive to learn, and continue to persevere in his chemistry career. Churchill is from Amherst, New York and is an avid ice hockey fan. He currently lives in “Science Town,” Daejeon, with his wife and two children.
