Happy Holidays!
It’s hard to believe we’ve already reached the end of the first semester! This fall has been packed with so many great moments—from fun school events to amazing learning experiences in the classroom. I’m so proud of everything our students have accomplished and thankful for the support of our families, teachers, and staff who make it all possible.
As we head into winter break, I hope you’ll find time to relax and enjoy family traditions. Breaks are also a great time to keep the learning going in fun and simple ways! Here are a few ideas:
- Read Together: Whether it’s a favorite holiday story or a new book, reading as a family is a great way to spend time together.
- Cook Together: Measuring ingredients and following recipes can help kids practice math and reading skills.
- Explore Outdoors: If the weather allows, take a nature walk and look for seasonal changes or make observations about the world around you.
- Game Night: Board games and puzzles can help kids practice critical thinking and teamwork.
- Create Art Projects: Encourage your child to get creative by drawing, painting, or making crafts. This builds fine motor skills and sparks imagination! Consider tying the projects to a theme, like making homemade decorations or thank-you cards.
- Keep a Journal: Have your child write about their holiday adventures or what they’re thankful for. Journaling strengthens writing skills and is a great way for them to reflect on their experiences.
Thank you for making this semester such a success. We’re excited for all the new opportunities and experiences the second semester will bring. Have a safe and happy holiday season, and we’ll see you in January!
💙 Mrs. Porter
🎉 IMPORTANT INFORMATION 🎉
Cold Weather Prep
With the winter months quickly approaching, please have your children wear a coat and hat to school. We will still have outdoor recess unless it rains or is below freezing.
School Messenger/Delays and Cancellations
As you know, North Vermillion uses the School Messenger calling system to notify you of any school delays, closings or other important issues that may arise. We also want to remind you that North Vermillion will continue to post delays on Channels 2 and 10 out of Terre Haute in the event of a delay or closing. If you have not heard through the calling system and feel like there may be reason for a delay or closing please make sure to check one of these news stations.
Safety Reminders
Bus Flashers & Stop Arms: It is illegal for traffic to pass a bus from either direction when it is loading or unloading students. The flashing yellow lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop. The flashing red lights and stop arms mean traffic is to stop from both directions. This is for the safety and protection of the children while loading or unloading.
Safety Reminders for Students: When waiting at bus stops, students are to be on the sidewalks or away from the edge of the street and not playing out in the street. Students are to remain on the sidewalk and wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before moving to the bus to board. Also, students are to remain seated at all times when the bus is in motion.
School Bus Reminders: Parents, we are asking for your help. Please leave your porch light on in the mornings (especially on the rural routes). This will give more light and serve as a safety precaution while your students are loading the bus. It also allows the driver to see the kids better as they approach the stop.
End of Day Transportation
We ask that parents please send a note to school or call 765-492-7010 (transportation option) before 1:00 p.m. regarding any transportation changes. We cannot guarantee information about changes called in after 1:00 p.m. will get to all the proper personnel. We do our best, but school dismissal is often the busiest time of the day.
Attendance Line
Parents are reminded that you can call 765-492-7010 (attendance option) to report your student absent from school. Just leave the student's name, teacher, grade level, and a brief reason.

IMPORTANT MEDICATION GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS
As we strive to maintain a safe and healthy school environment, we want to remind all parents and students about the important guidelines regarding medication brought to school.
1. Medication Storage: All medication must be kept in the school office. This ensures that it is stored safely and administered correctly.
2. Original Containers: Medication must be in its original container, clearly labeled with the student's name, the name of the medication, and dosage instructions. This helps us ensure that your child receives the correct medication.
3. Parental Notification: A note from a parent or guardian is required for any medication brought to school. This note should include the student’s name, the name of the medication, dosage, and any specific instructions.
4. No Self-Administration: Students are not allowed to keep any medication in their pockets or take it on their own. All medication must be administered by school personnel to ensure safety and compliance.
5. Narcotic Medications: For any narcotic medications, an adult must bring the medication to school. This is crucial for the safety and well-being of all students.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our school a safe place for everyone. If you have any questions or concerns regarding these guidelines, please feel free to reach out to the school nurse.
WEDNESDAY EARLY DISMISSALS
Our staff will once again participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) where we come together as a group of educators to plan for ways to best support our students. Part of the PLC process includes the entire staff meeting together on Wednesdays to focus on upcoming skills and concepts to be taught, determine the best way to gauge student learning, and make adjustments to instruction to support all learners. In order for this meeting to take place, students will dismiss early ever Wednesday for the remainder of the school year.
If a 2-hour delay is ever called on a Wednesday, we will NOT dismiss early on that day.
This year the elementary students will be dismissed before the high school and will begin the dismissal process at 2:20 on Wednesdays.
