Message From Mrs. Merivirta
It is with mixed emotions that I write this last Wiley Way. Time has flown by! It has been a pleasure and an honor to have served the Wiley community for the past six years. I will miss the students and the school community more than words can say. I have appreciated the hugs, smiles, conversations, and parental support. The needs of our students has always been my priority, and I am sure that Mrs. McInally, your interim principal, will serve the Wiley Community well.
We will be celebrating Halloween with a Halloween Spirit Week the week of October 28th. See flyer below for details. Additionally, we will hold our annual parade at 10:30 AM on Thursday morning. If weather permits, students will parade around outside the building, leaving through the front doors and re-entering through the sixth grade doors. Parents are encouraged to stand on the play pad as students walk around the school. If it rains, students will parade through the building and into the gym; parents will be allowed to enter through the gym doors (on the north side) , beginning at 10:20 AM and wait inside the gym as students walk through.
My last day at Wiley will be Halloween, I look forward to seeing you at the parade! I look forward to visiting in the future and seeing the great things that are happening.
As always, I thank you for your continued partnership in ensuring that every every child succeeds!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Merivirta
Happenings At Wiley
Mr. Hulbert was Taped to the Wall!
Being the great sport that he always is, Mr. Hulbert was taped to the wall because students and families met one of our fundraising goal. On Friday, students who reached a certain level were able to add tape to secure Mr. Hulbert to the wall. Thank you Mr. Hulbert!!!
Family Math Night
This past week Wiley staff held a Parent Math Night, providing students and parents with an opportunity to learn more about strategies to help their children become fluent in math as well as play games that can be played to build fact fluency. See pictures below:
Character Strong Assembly ~ RESPECT
This week we recognized students in grades K-6 who have exemplified the characteristic trait of being RESPECTFUL of self, others and belonging. Mrs. Banish, our ISM Teacher who is utilizing the Character Strong curriculum to teach our students Social Emotional Skills on a weekly basis, worked with students throughout the month of September to help students understand the many ways that students can show respect. Teachers were asked to identify students who demonstrated the trait. At our monthly assembly, students were recognized and were then given a certificate. Throughout October students have focused on the trait of REPONSIBILITY. Students who have demonstrated this trait will be recognized in early November. Congratulations to our Wiley Coyotes!

ACCENTUATING THE POSITIVE
Once again we will be accentuating the positive, recognizing students who demonstrate positive behaviors. Students are given positive office referrals when they exhibit great behaviors such as demonstrating self-control, hard work, a positive attitude, responsibility, teamwork and honesty.
Teachers write the referral and then students are called to the office to meet with me and share their success! Their picture is taken, the referral is sent home to share with their family and their picture is then placed in the Wiley Way. Take a look at our recipients. Great job Wiley Coyotes!

Safety remains a priority for our schools. Wiley Elementary will once again be providing training to our students on our safety protocols. The protocols identify actions that students may be asked to take in the event of a potential incident: hold, secure, lockdown, evacuate and shelter.
The training is provided through a short, animated video. In the video, the teacher – Mrs. Appleton – and her students walk through the different responses in a very relaxed and engaging way for younger children. The script was written by our staff.
The protocols will continue to be part of the training while practicing our regular school safety drills, such as fire drills, security drills, tornado drills, evacuation procedures, etc.
The video is available for you to review at this link: UCS School Safety: Standard Response Protocol - Elementary - YouTube If you have any questions, please contact our office.
LUNCH DELIVERY REMINDERS
While we understand the appeal of having fast food delivered to school, we prioritize the health, safety, and well-being of our entire student body. Allowing outside food deliveries creates logistical challenges, disrupts the school environment, and can lead to unfair advantages for some students. For these reasons, fast food deliveries during school hours will not be permitted. We encourage all students to either bring a packed lunch or enjoy the free meals provided in our cafeteria.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
SECURITY PROCEDURES
We are asking for your assistance to ensure that our security procedures during the school day are effective and efficient. When you wish to visit Wiley Elementary, come to front door marked OFFICE. At this door we have a security camera, intercom, and buzzer. To help us assist you when you would like to enter our school:
- Please press the buzzer to speak with someone in the office
- You will be asked to state your name and reason for visiting
- You will be asked to show your photo id into the security camera
- Office staff will buzz the door for you to enter the building
- Please pass through the lobby and enter the office
- Office staff will help you with your request
In addition, we are asking you to not let any visitors in the door as you enter (as they come up behind you) or as you exit the building.
The teachers and staff are committed to student safety and security, and we would like to thank you for your assistance in helping keep the students of Wiley safe.
CELEBRATING BIRTHDAYS
The teachers and staff at Wiley support and encourage the recognition of a child’s birthday during the school day. It is an annual milestone in every child’s life that should be celebrated not just at home, but in school as well, where children spend one-third of their day with teachers, classmates, and peers. While there are many wonderful and creative ways to celebrate a child’s birthday in school, birthday celebrations at Wiley will not include food treats. Instead, the focus at Wiley will be recognizing the day in a variety of special ways that do not include food treats. Some possibilities include:
· Class sings “Happy Birthday”
· Happy Birthday Recess/Gift
· Morning “Happy Birthday” PA announcement
· Parent makes a donation of book to class library or a classroom game
· Student reads favorite book to class
· Parent/special someone reads story to class
Your child’s teacher will have more information on how birthdays will be celebrated in the classroom. As educators, caregivers and loved ones we all want the best for our students. Thank you for joining us in giving students healthy opportunities to celebrate important events and achievements.
We LOVE our Volunteers!
Any prospective volunteer of Utica Community Schools including those who will be supervising students, working with students, chaperoning field trip, etc. must complete a Criminal History Check Form and be cleared prior to any volunteer services.
Volunteer background checks must be completed annually. If a parent has students in more than one school, only one volunteer form must be completed.
Click on the link below the photos, complete the form and return to Wiley Office.
